Raptors Ratings on the Rise

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Mon Nov 17, 2014 1:51 am

What's hot: Is that the Toronto Raptors drawing big audiences and winning all those games? The first-place Raptors attracted well over 200,000 viewers for two games on the weekend, impressive considering one was on Sportsnet One and the other went up against the NFL on Sunday. If the team stays hot, this could be the breakthrough the NBA has been hoping for.

10. Auto racing, NASCAR Quicken 500, Sunday, TSN: 420,000

11. CFL, RedBlacks at Argos, Friday, TSN: 389,000

12. NFL, Bears at Packers, Sunday, TSN: 357,000 (NBC audience not measured)

13. NBA, Wizards at Raptors, Friday, Sportsnet One: 251,000

14. NBA, Sixers at Raptors, Sunday, Sportsnet East, Ontario, Pacific: 241,000

15. Hockey, Four Nations Cup final, Saturday, TSN: 238,000

16. Figure skating, Cup of China, Saturday, CBC: 233,000

That list didn't look good until I opened the link and looked at other games after #16 haha. Looked like we only edged out Four Nations Cup and figure skating, but there were some NHL games after.

Imagine what that number would have been on a more accessible channel?

Winning fixes everything, but it also amazes me how narrow minded TV executives are in this country. They look at the basketball market as some fixed entity and lack the vision of what it could be were it nurtured even a little.

Almost beating out NASCAR and meaningless CFL games now. Progress indeed.

If a team in Saskatchewan can garner those ratings, whose to say we can't get at least half of that?

The thing with them and the CFL in general is that most of their games on shown on TSN. Where as we have a different channel every game.

Honestly if you look at those numbers as a whole, ratings for Canadian Sports television is kind of laughable.

We have the population of California basically. We're not going to be putting up the ratings that America does. It's just not possible.

Last season in the playoffs and this season early on have proven to me that a winning team that is at least competitive will be enough to get the city of Toronto excited. That's all I really care about - a strong local market with decent media attention.
