Tyson Chandler traded to Thunder (official)

Post#1 » by douggood » Tue Feb 17, 2009 6:28 pm

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3913301

The New Orleans Hornets and Oklahoma City Thunder have completed a deal that sends center Tyson Chandler to the Thunder, according to NBA front-office sources.

Sources with knowledge of the trade parameters told ESPN.com that the deal was approved by the league office Tuesday afternoon, with the Hornets receiving forwards Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox in exchange for their best interior defender.

The deal has yet to be announced by the teams, but sources say that the Hornets will also receive the draft rights to DeVon Hardin, who was selected No. 50 overall by the Thunder in the 2008 draft.

From the Chad Ford Chat:

Can you elaborate on the breaking news that the Hornets are going to trade Chandler to the Thunder???!!!

Chad Ford: (1:27 PM ET ) Marc Stein is reporting that they'll send Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox there (both expiring contracts) for Chandler. Great trade for the Thunder in my opinion. They needed a young, athletic big. They are stacked with talent now with Durant, Westbrook, Green and Chandler. If they add a two guard like James Harden in the draft ... wow.

Chad Ford: (1:28 PM ET ) Clearly this is a cap cutting exercise for the Hornets

While Chandler has been disappointing this year, that move will hurt the Hornets' frontcourt. Cap-relief is more important than wins, I guess. The Hornets are likely the only team in the league with a worse wing situation than us. If they could swing Salmons and Udrih instead, though, that would be a nice deal.

The Hornets are doomed, this is God's revenge on George Shinn for moving the team from Charlotte and then trying to abandon NOLA after the hurricane.

the spurs dude running the thunder now is running a clinic on how to rebuild a team.

prior to his arrival - they drafted collison + swift + sene...wasting all these lotto picks on not so good big men.

after he gets there - they take durant, trade ray to take jeff green. got 3 #1 picks for kurt thomas. and now is about to take advantage of the economy.

this is a buyer's market.

Thunder looking serious with Krystic, Durant, Chandler, Green....wow.

Now that is a rebuild. Impressed.

Flid side. I feel bad for a Hornets team that is marred by financial problems. CP# is not going to be happy about this one.

For expirings? What about Parker + Joey for Chandler? N.O could use a vet SG for the rest of the season if they're just looking to salary dump.

Then move Bargs for a SG.

Would never happen, but I love the Thunders future.

So Hilton Armstrong is now their full time starter?

So much for the Hornets making noise in the playoffs.

No, Wilcox and Smith will take those minutes. Neither is as good as Chandler, but Paul can make Wilcox look good and Smith gives them depth at the 4/5 that they didn't have.

And, yeah, can you imagine if OKC can land Harden in the draft? Westbrook, Harden, Durant, Green and Chandler - yikes!!

Paul is gonna be pissed. I say he shave his unibrow as protest.

Didnt he and Deron sign 3 year extensions?
why was hakeem called "the dream"??"

Because it rhymes with 'Olajuwon'.

I think Paul will bolt at this rate.. I know you want to cut costs but Chandler was the perfect big for that team, long and athletic enough to catch CP3's alley oop passes, and capable of cleaning up after David West on the glass..

They were serious contenders last year, now they're probably out in the first round..

he signed a 4 year extension with a player option for the 5th season. he can opt out after 2011/2012 season.

A legit young 5 who is athletic able to run and a defensive presence. Nah, why would WE need such a thing given our front court talent? I'd love to hear the excuses for why our diety of a gm is never in on anything near this good.

for the same reason the other 28 gms couldnt do it. Cap room to absorb Chandlers salary without matching salaries in return. Also helps to have 5 first round picks in the next 2 drafts.

Again.....

How does Amare look without Nash?

How does Chandler look without Paul?

Chandler was not that great with the Bulls who were without a great point guard.

Chandler is not an Allstar talent but will be a nice piece with Krystic next year.

no more CP3 alleys to Chandler :(

... but it's a great move for OKC. Contrary to what Chad Ford says about them drafting a two-guard, i think they'd be better off drafting a PF. I beleive KD's ideal position is SG. Someone like Blake Griffen would be absolutely amazing for them.

Westbrook/KD/Green/Griffen/Chandler... wow!
