what team would rubio fit in with the most?

Post#1 » by diggity_88 » Tue Apr 21, 2009 5:48 pm

I'm putting this in here only because the draft and international thread sucks and there seems to be a lot of Rubio fans on here. So if not the Raptors, what team do you think Rubio would excel in and why?

Toronto, he would be useless elsewhere, that's why we're the only team that can draft him :D

Ideal for Toronto cuz Calderon can groom him for a few years.

But Sacramento, Minnesota and Golden State are much more desperate for a true PG. New York is there too. Duhon is nothing but a stop-gap.

He'd be a good fit with the Wizards, he could play the point on offense and defend SG's on defense allowing Arenas to play more a SG on offense without having to defend the opposing SG.

Toronto for the following reasons.

1. Toronto is the cloest you will get to a European city in the NBA. Montreal and Toronto are the mot European influenced cities in North America. Montreal with more of the style of France/Hollond/Den Mark. Toronto with more of an English/Italian/Greek/Spain feel.

2. Jose is our starting point guard. Not only will he help Ricky develop, but they are friends and know eachother. It will help him adjust off the court, as well as on the court.

3. We have lots of guys on the Raptors who made the transition from Europe, not just players.

4. our co-gm is a legend in Europe.

Toronto really is the ideal place for him to play. It's not just about the style of basketball. You have to look at off the court factors as well.

The better a player feels, and the quicker they adjust to the culture shock, the better they will play. If ricky ends up in a place like New York, or Washington, it will take him much longer to develop, because it will take him longer to fee comfortable and feel good about making the move.

San Antonio

he's got Tony P as a mentor and will be guided by one of the best coaching staffs in the L, not to mention that he wouldnt be forced to be a producer asap, giving him ample time to adapt.

The Lakers. Why not go to the best team with the best coach where the plan would be to find the best ways to get the ball to Kobe.

To the guy who thinks Toronto's good because Calderon could groom him for a few years, are you sure you're thinking of the same two players?

Rubio started ahead of Calderon in the Olympic gold medal game when he was still only 17. Calderon is nowhere near him. Calderon's a role player, while Rubio is one of those special talents that comes along once every 5 or 10 years. He doesn't need a lot of time to learn. He really just needs to get out on the floor and play. He held his own in that gold medal game against the best players in the world and he was just a kid.

By the way I think the Warriors, 76ers and Knicks would be good for him. Warrior and 76ers because of they're athleticism. All great point guards do more with athletic players who can run and jump. Just look at Nash and Kidd. They make even average guys look great, as long as they can go get the ball when they throw a pass in the vicinity of the rim.
Knicks would also be good because he's a very charasmatic player and is probably one of the few guys who could perform on the biggest stage in the NBA. Madison Square Garden ain't for everyone.

He'd also look great in a Toronto uniform, but we would need to add an athletic wing or two. He's great in the pick and roll, but is also amazing on fast breaks and shouldn't be stuck with garbage fastbreak guys like Parker and Kapono.

Ultimately I don't think there are many teams he wouldn't fit in nicely with. Just keep him off the Clippers. Nobody can win there. lol.

Sac-Town, desperate for a pg, doesnt have playoff pressure, and plays in the free fast pace west coast. If there planning on trading Baron maybe the clippers as well? He would be the face of that franchise, someone to really build around.

Calderon didn't even play because he was injured. When healthy Calderon was the leader of that team and the starter.

Calderon would help him adjust to the NBA, a new city and he could help him with his shot. Calderon doesn't have the court vision that Rubio has, or the defense, but he is the better leader at this point, the better shooter (in every category) and he is one of the smartest point guards in the game. Of course Rubio's ceiling is much higher, but right now Calderon is easily the better player. He's just too safe for this Raptor team. They need someone to create something other then outside shots.

NY and Golden State could use his ball handling, Decision making and defense desperately.
