Holly's "We're Talking About Practice": Nov. 12, 2009

Holly MacKenzie wrote:- About there only being nine guys practising: Jose Calderon tweaked his groin in the third quarter of the game last night, but came back to play and rested today. Andrea Bargnani (sore Achilles) Antoine Wright (sore elbow), Chris Bosh and Hedo Turkoglu (sore hip) all took the day off to be rested for the road trip.

- On (DeMar's) rebounding skills: "He's a good rebounder for a guard and we need our guards to come in and help rebound. Our bigs don't track extremely well. They rebound the balls that come to them and the one thing about DeMar is he can go track. He can find out where it is and go get it."

DeRozan's minutes might increase :D

On his rebounding skills: "He's a good rebounder for a guard and we need our guards to come in and help rebound. Our bigs don't track extremely well. They rebound the balls that come to them and the one thing about DeMar is he can go track. He can find out where it is and go get it."

"In the last couple of games, he's earned more of a rotation late in the first half and maybe back again late in the third, early in the fourth quarter."

Ya that is scary. But at the same time, I'm not sure when he tweaked it but I believe he still ran well after that, and still turned the corner and drove for some layups after his injury, but absolutely with his history, it's very concerning. But hopefully it's nothing serious.

Yes i am concerned whenever i hear Calderon pulled or tweaked anything. And Derozan is a good rebounder, but will he be able to keep up the energy on the defensive end when he is asked to play more minutes and focus more on offense?

He's 20 years old and in phenomenal shape, so I don't see why not. If he keeps up his current play, I'd like to see his minutes go up to 30mpg, where he could give the Raptors 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1.5 blocks per game.

It's good to make D-Roz earn those minutes... even though he was playing well yesterday and could have gotten time to see the fourth, making it a delayed effect might be more motivation for him to always bring it.

Jose's groin may be a concern over the upcoming weeks. groins don't like to heal easily and it may get aggravated. or get worse.
the concern would be Jose sitting 1-2 weeks to rest the groin and having Jack start. i'm having visions of Jack slashing to the rim and putting up the same feeble layup attempt that he did in traffic yesterday. looked like the kind of shot a grade 7 kid tries to make in practice.

So, did Triano just admit that our bigs can't rebound?

I think it's more to the fact that everyone needs to rebound as a team to be successful.

True. And it might avoid what happened to Bargnani, with loosing his confidence when he'de get his a lot of undeserved minutes, then inevitably get them cut because he wasn't ready for them.

That tweaked groin worries me. Hope it doesn't become a bigger problem in the long run and later in the season.

Hopefully Banks get's some minutes and plays well enough to boot JJ to the bench during this time

Yes, because our starting center can't/won't rebound most nights.

Ugh groin injuries stay around FOREVER. Hope he takes the requisite amount of rest.

That will be true so long as he keeps defense and transition play his top priority, and defers to the rest of our starters more on the offensive end. Look at the stats of guys earlier in their career like T-MAC and now Ariza. Once they start focusing on offense, their defensive intensity begins to slag.
