09-10 Raptors and their Defensive Effect

Post#1 » by DarkKnight » Fri Nov 20, 2009 11:20 pm

Guys in the normal rotation, from 82games.com, per 100 possessions

Points Allowed
Player On Court Off Court
Bosh 118.0 118.2
Beli 114.9 120.3
Bargs 117.7 119.1
Jose 118.8 116.5
Hedo 117.9 118.5
Demar 116.3 119.2
Wright 116.7 118.9
Amir 110.6 121.9
Jack 120.0 116.2

What it means: Bargnani has been better than bosh on defense. Amir has been significantly better than either one. Beli has been the best of the wing players. Both point guards are draining the defense pretty badly. Best defensive lineup that could conceivably work on the court: Beli, Demar, Hedo, Amir, Bargs. Worst lineup: Jose, Jack, Hedo, Bosh, Bargs. Funny how that last one looks like something we try to go with a lot. Of course, looking at them as individuals and then assembling lineups from it doesn't really translate, but its still interesting to look at.

Also, for fun, shotblocking from 82games:

Bosh: 11 blocks, 1 jump shot, 10 inside, 0 dunks, 18 shooting fouls.
Bargs: 15 blocks, 7 jump shot, 8 inside, 0 dunks, 19 shooting fouls.
Amir: 5 blocks, 1 jump shot, 4 close, 0 dunks, 22 shooting fouls.

So while amir has a terrific overall effect on the defense, he fouls a LOT compared to his block rate. This is part of why he doesn't work in the starting lineup as some have suggested. He's also yet to make a jump shot this year (unrelated but funny).

Amazing. Same people who dismissed these stats last year when it showed Bargs among our worst starters are now using it show how much better of defender Bargs is than Bosh.

And, also, vice versa.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

I'm not sure about other people, but I have always said you have to take the stats into context. One thing it is way to early to start using +/- or individual and team ratings. The sample is so small. One game can change this dramatically.

One of the main arguments last year was how much Moon was hurting our defense and offense. People basically saying that he was one of the reason why we sucked so bad. The stats showed that he had great impact on our defense and he was not hurting our starting lineup. But people because of their blind hate for minimum salaried player couldn't get past the fact the stats proved they were wrong.

Alarming stuff, but nothing we didn't already know.

Those are all terrible numbers No one, outside of maybe Amir, deserves praise for defence.
