Daily Papers Dec 10/09

Post#1 » by vini_vidi_vici » Thu Dec 10, 2009 10:58 am

Toronto Star
No chance without Calderon, Bargnani

It was a night for someone to take control, a night when a weakened team needed an unexpected boost, when the Raptors looked for someone to pick up some slack. They got nothing.

They got nothing from Hedo Turkoglu, the high-salaried free-agent acquisition. They got nothing from Marco Belinelli, the frenetic backup, who is supposed to bring consistent energy. They got nothing from rookie DeMar DeRozan.

What they got – not unexpectedly – was a loss.

Toronto Sun
Out of Step

It was their second road game in as many nights and the Toronto Raptors needed someone -- anyone -- to step up.

With starters Andrea Bargnani and Jose Calderon both in street clothes, it was all the more important.

And when too few Raptors beyond Chris Bosh elevated their games, the 117-95 pasting they suffered at the hands of the struggling Milwaukee Bucks last night was not surprising.

Raptors value takes a drop

The Toronto Raptors -- 11th on the list -- were estimated to be worth $386 million, citing a three per cent drop in value.

At the bottom of the 30-team rankings are the Milwaukee Bucks at $254 million.

Raptors Replay

EX-FACTOR

Bucks guard Roko Ukic, playing against his former team for the first time, scored 17 points -- which was more than anyone on the Raps with the exception of Chris Bosh.

National Post
Bucks dominate as Raptors' offence sputters

Talk of spreading the floor permeates the Toronto Raptors to the point where the basketball jargon truly starts to lose meaning.

However, take away a few of Toronto's vaunted perimeter shooters and the meaning comes flying back. Without the threat of the three-point shot, Toronto's offence can look suffocated.

Globe and Mail
Bucks snap Raptors' win streak

Rookie Brandon Jennings said he needed to be aggressive from the start. It almost cost him in the end.

Jennings scored 22 points before hyperextending his left knee near the close of the third quarter and the Milwaukee Bucks shot 52.5 per cent to beat the Toronto Raptors 117-95 on Wednesday night.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Bucks end 4-game losing streak

In the end, it went into the record books as a victory for the Milwaukee Bucks.

A much-needed victory, that is, for the Bucks, who had lost four straight and eight of nine.

But will Milwaukee's 117-95 decision over the Toronto Raptors at the Bradley Center on Wednesday night go down as an especially well-played game by the Bucks? That depends on what end of the court we're talking about.

Thanks for the papers. And thanks for the... um... modification to the format. ;)

I see the media also picked up on the idea that Calderon and Bargs are essential to the offense. I still have no idea where this team is going.

Yea no prob, it started as a joke, and I was quickly becoming the pariah around here much like Calderon/Bargnani haha!

As to your point tho, I think as bad as our D is, its compounded when we cant have guys like JC/AB to help us outscore the opposition, not so much that they are essential. My point being if we had the superb defense of a PG/C combo, and not Jack/Rasho (more suitable for the bench) starting, our offense would still be effective, yet we probably wouldnt surrender as many points as we did last night, and if JC/AB are in, you might see more surrendered but also more points gained, but thats subjective. It did show that no matter what team, when losing your starting PG/C, its tough to overcome.

They got nothing from Hedo Turkoglu, the high-salaried free-agent acquisition. They got nothing from Marco Belinelli, the frenetic backup, who is supposed to bring consistent energy. They got nothing from rookie DeMar DeRozan.

Doug Smith picking on the rook again for no reason. He had 8/6 in 25 minutes with 6 trips to the line. The other two guys did nothing except for one small stretch, and then Triano decided to play Turk as a C and Milwaukee somehow took advantage of that and ended the game.

I would agree, why pick on Derozan. He started the game great. Its not his fault he's not incorporated enough. But when he got the ball, he did good things.

Thanks for the papers ... though I agree someone should have stepped up but this is our 4rth game in 5 nights? And with two of our key starters out? Only watched the 4rth quarter but the guys looked really gassed out ...

Thanks.

This team needs to define players' roles better. Marcus shouldn't be playing, even with calderon out. I'd rather see Marco/Hedo back up Jack. All of Wrights' minutes needs to go to Demar, the kid is here long term, develop him. I doubt Wright is here past this season. NO MORE WRIGHT!! I'm tired of seeing this guys' defence as the reason we play him, he's not a good defender, he's worse than old man Parker was.

t4pz + shoutout....makes me feel all warm inside.

Turkoglu's gonna have to cut down on his pre-grame pizza pie ritual. Takes him til the 4th quarter to finally digest that beast and play somewhat adequately. PnR him with Bosh all day when Jose is out. Jack's shot is unreliable to run that play as often as he does with no other perimeter threats on the floor.
