If your player is acting immature/unfocused/not helping the team win, despite having more talent then he's showing maybe benching him for a while would shake him up and make him the better player in the long run. Where if you were to let him get away with it, and just keep playing him maybe he wouldn't step up his focus, work ethic, attitude etc...
Probably depends on the players personality. A lot of guys could go the other way, and end up with a disgrunteled player. Knicks don't really have a lot to loose anyways though.
