Bargs growth?

Post#1 » by RapstoRiches » Tue Jan 19, 2010 10:06 pm

Does anybody wonder if we didn't have Smitch as coach for the first 2 and change years of Bargs in the league that he could be a 20/10 player right now? Obviously Smitch had Bargs on a super-short leash and that impacted his growth as a player. I just wonder in he had a head coach like Triano giving him minutes and allowing him to go through the ups/downs that he would have that borderline allstar potental that BC always seen in him. People were willing to trade Bargs for next to nothing last year and now a year under Triano he's proving his worth as our 2nd best player. Thoughts?

I think his growth as a player is pretty standard for a big man in the NBA. It always takes awhile for C's and PF's to find their NBA game.

Saying that, Smitch really held Bargnani back, he wasn't the right coach for him.

nah it just takes time for finnesse bigman to develop in the pros.. he finally has the swagger and confidence he lacked before.. he knows his role... and that hes one of the primary offensive options..

Smitch wasn't that bad for Bargs development. If anything he got to learn to earn his minutes and that he needed a kick in the arse to play D and get boards. He seems to be finding that extra gear now and I think Smitch and Triano, although different, have both had a certain amount of positive effect on his growth.

BTW, when I read this title I thought he was diagnosed with a growth that needed to be surgically removed.
That's what she said.

Smitch clearly didn't handle Andrea or Joey G properly. Those guys needed to make tons of mistakes in order to understand that making mistakes is not the end of the world. That said, Bargnani was going to struggle no matter what. He was so raw coming in, and all the experts said the ability is there, but you have to give him 5 years. Of course that didn't stop half of Toronto from wanting to show up at his door with torches and pitchforks. Let's also not forget that CB credits Smitch with a lot of his developement. Every player is different.

I think he can speed up half / full year, but probably not any faster.
Playing PF/C is hard, because you are easily get into foul trouble.

Had Smitch stayed around any longer Bargnani would have been traded for scraps. The most talked about rumor at the time was Andrea and a first rounder for..... John Salmons.

Smitch was a tool of incompetence.

IL MAGO!!!!

I know big men take longer to develop but how did the following players do in their first 3 seasons?

Shaq
Tim Duncan
Hakeem
Patrick Ewing
Pau Gasol

And none of them were coached by Smitch! That was the key!

As much as I enjoyed Smitch's interviews, he almost ruined Bargnani.
I do what I feel, not because people ask me to do this,” Bargnani says, holding his hands over his head and doing a strange chicken dance.

Idiotic comparisons..the first three were projected as monsters from their 1st day forward. Picking them shows what a retrospective genius you are, and Gasol played for a team in his first few seasons that had few other options to go to.
