What if we land a top 3 pick

Post#1 » by AingesBurner » Wed May 4, 2016 6:07 pm

Lets say the Basketball Gods are with us year and we jump into top 3 for the draft, what do the Jazz do? If its top two do we keep Ingram or Simmons or do we package that pick with Hayward and go for a high caliber star? Thoughts and hopes?

The same thing you should do with any lottery pick: draft best player available.

If we get a top 2 pick which is Ingram or Simmons, I say keep it. If you trade it for a star - assuming we could get one - then we'll have him under contract for 4 years at most. If we keep the pick, we can keep our guy for more than 7.
Draft Nate Wolters - FAILED
Keep Nate Wolters - FAILED

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

If we were to luck into a top 2 pick then we take Simmons or Ingram and make a trade to find minutes for them. At 3 it gets tougher because I haven't seen enough of Bender to make a judgement.

I don't think a trade is needed right away for minutes if we landed a top two pick. There are plenty of minutes to go around. I'd make a run at a good season with that player as depth. And then resign Hayward next season. And then IF that player has proven to be the real deal move Hayward or Hood. Hell with the way the league is going maybe you trade Favs and have Hayward play small ball PF.

Personally I would see what someone would offer me for the top 2 but if nothing exciting then take Ingram or Simmons, see if that player becomes a star and let Hayward go when his contract is up. If its number 3 then I try to trade up or package it for a stud but if thats not possible then I trade down for Buddy Hield and good veteran.

I think this idea is getting blown way out of proportion. I think you can make small ball work when you have the perfect combination of players, including a couple of shooters like Curry/Thompson. I don't see small ball as some new wave of the future that everyone will turn to.

That is worst case scenario. You either trade him or re-sign him. Losing a player like that for nothing sets the team back considerably.

Dude needs to wear #50, that way when he's on the fast break, everybody can yell "Here comes five-oh!"

Hell didn't think about that but you are 100% correct, was thinking about contract cost situation but he should be traded in this scenario.

I agree it's being over blown. But we have Lyles and Hayward could play 10-15 mins a night at PF against teams that do play smallball. Hayward plays good defense in the post against bigger guys. He always seems to do really well against Melo. But yes, in general it's an overreaction by the league.

Only way we land a top 3 pick is if Lebron opts out and signs with the Jazz.
