Grizzlies: How to Acquire a backup PG

Post#1 » by SD2042 » Sat Jan 18, 2014 11:12 pm

http://www.grizzlybearblues.com/2014/1/ ... ckup-point

There are ten year olds out there who wonder if they will ever live in a world where the Memphis Grizzlies have a good backup point guard. That is the cross that incumbent backup point guard, Nick Calathes, must bear. If given their druthers, many Grizzlies fans would handle Calathes like Poot and Bodie handled Wallace (sorry folks, that clip is a little too vulgar to link to).

But that's not the point of this article. The Grizzlies shouldn't give up on Calathes yet. Giving up on any player just six months into their NBA careers is foolishness - unless of course his name is Hasheem Thabeet.

Conventional wisdom is now that Marc Gasol has returned, the Grizzlies have a logjam in the frontcourt. Pair that strength with the glaring weakness at the backup point guard, and it stands to reason that Kosta Koufos or Ed Davis should be the most likely players to be traded for a backup point guard.

ill never trade kosta or ed for a BACKUP point guard... sign a free agent : tinsley or daniel gibson or someone from the dleague with experience, we just need 15 min a game.

Without a doubt we need a backup PG with some experience. I'm leaning more on Jameer Nelson, Norris Cole, or Luke Ridnour as potential targets.

I think it does. Can't believe it's been a year since the trade of Rudy. He would play for Toronto for six months and turns around and gets traded to Sacramento. Talk about a whirlwind.

Seeing that Beno Udrih has requested a trade from the Knicks, what of his chances of being the backup for Mike Conley? His contract is a rental. He's playoff battle tested and is more dependable offensively for at least 15-20 of backup minutes.

Udrih is the kind of player we need.

It would've work had Vasquez been traded again within the 72 hour window after being traded from his previous team. It will have to be the offseason for Vasquez to be eligible for trade.

I wonder what Keyon Dooling is up to? Just for a vet min deal... he might be at least someone to show Calathes the ropes until second season.

Another player I have always been down on is Delonte West. However, perhaps he's had time to chill and could come in and be productive?

Was watching Chris Johnson last night on the Celtics last night. He had some good games with us last year. he looked great with Bradley and Bayless injured. Unfortunately Rondo looks terrible. 1/2 speed. just got me to think about other former C's like Dooling + West...

On Dooling, I thought he was playing assistant coach for some team within the league. I would not mind Delonte West, if he done a better job handling his bi-polar disorder while he was playing. Unfortunately he has been labeled the "poison" player like Lamar Odom has been declared as of the past offseason.

Lamar Odom was here in the fall working to get rehab and get in shape on campus at Univ. Rhode Island. Everyone said he was in a good mood and looked in good shape. After hearing all the positive reports, I was surprised he didn't get back on an NBA team. I know he fell off the deep end but what the media shows and reality can be really skewed. I got these accounts from non-NBA fans that ran into him on campus. Just said he was a nice guy.

That's the vibe I get off Odom since his time in the NBA. All around cool guy. It's just that he fell into the wrong crowd in the past few years up in L.A. and with those Kardashians fools. If he wants to break away from all the negativity that's taken over his life, he needs to lose what's been weighing him down and take control of his life. It may due Odom justice if he considers moving from L.A. and find another place to live where it's less crazy and more quiet.

I`m 100percent agree with everybody. If Grizzlies will not tank in this season we must aquire an average or good back up PG soon as possible.

All of the Grizzlies fans know that Calethes can`t shoot from the perimeter and can`t defense at all. He play like a poor version of Ricky Rubio to me. Also when Calethes play with Mike Miller together backcoart defense is horrendously bad and Ball is stopping almost every posession.

Nick Calethes need send to D-League and hire or trade to get average or good back up PG. Otherwise it`s very difficult to make the Playoff in this season especially Western Conference.

I did a study about the backup point guard situation and entered it on my blog:

http://grizzvan.blogspot.com/2014/01/lo ... -2014.html

I guess my point is that we could fill this void without getting a backup point guard per se.

That could be the same rumor from last week about Knight from that article. How valid it is, I can't say.

how about something like this ?

ATL- Koufus
Mem - Antic,Mack

fillers/picks could be added .

saves mem some money this year .

i really like the mil idea with knight coming back ..if zbo opts out for a cheaper 3 year deal we could make a nice move in FA

I'm not too familiar with Antic outside of him being Al Horford's replacement with his season ending and all. I'm a little familiar with Mack. Caught a couple of games from his college days at Butler. Decent defender, can slash to the post, and his perimeter offense isn't his strong suit. Subpar PG for NBA standards.
