Calathes being hidden from the rest of the league...

Post#1 » by CalathesD » Sun Mar 8, 2015 8:12 pm

It has to be said - Calathes can guard 1-3 and may very well be the best all around defender in the game on the perimeter. Calathes is tenacious defensively. This shocks me, seeing as how his defense was the question mark at Florida.

IMO, the Grizzlies don't play him more because some team will figure out that he's worth a lot of money. If they can hide him until its time to sign a contract, they will get a huge bargain.

Calathes should be a starting PG in this league and anyone with basketball intellect knows it.

"Nick Calathes though? Really? Yes. Calathes is actually one of the more highly rated defenders on the Memphis Grizzlies. Three stats favor him in particular: steal percentage, defensive real plus-minus, and defensive rating. He is first in steal percentage among players with 400+ minutes at 39.8%, 27th in defensive real plus-minus with a 2.63, and 2nd in defensive rating at 92.7."

The only thing he's hiding from is Tony Allen's fists.

I was very impressed with Calathes when you last played the Jazz. I think he'd be a guy I'd target in free agency.

Other than his defense, what else can you tell me about him?
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

From the 40 or so games i've seen this season it seems that he has a knack for bricking shots and turning the ball over.

I'd love to see him in Utah, but y'all seem to be sold on Exum. Calathes has great court vision and has great instincts on both ends. He's 6'5 and long, so he can contest a lot of shots even after he's screened. Great ball handler.

The playoffs should showcase him a little more to the world.

He looks older than he actually is.

Calathes is an RFA. I'm not sure he's hidden from the rest of the league; I think he might be an interesting get.
Questions
1) Does he show any signs of being a decent 3pt shooter?
2) How high will the Grizz go to keep him? The Tax Payers MLE?

I was watching the Memphis loss to Portland the other day. Seemed to me that Memphis imploded when they took Calathes out there with 8 minutes or so to play. The coach eventually did put him back in, and he wasn't that good at that point missing a few easy shots. But, I was still of the impression that Memphis would have won that game had they just kept Calathes guarding Lillard to end the game.
