I've never seen anyone attempt to chart "shot prevention"...I'm not really sure how you could, but I would bet that if such a project were ever undertaken Garnett would lead this generation.

I do make a somewhat feeble attempt to keep track of what I call "ownage" (really, it's just like a defensive version of usage). Here's how I define it:

Code: Select all

own=(afg2cp+afg3cp+ufg2cp+ufg3cp+cpmiss+pf)*100.0/poss

That's basically all counterpart FGA + personal fouls (assuming fouls are somewhat correlated to opponent shots against you). This metric is per 100 possessions.

Top 10 among PF/C for 2010-11

Code: Select all

1   Tim Duncan   16.84
2   Andrew Bynum   17.84
3   Anderson Varejao   18.04
4   Kevin Garnett   18.08
5   Marc Gasol   18.08
6   Andray Blatche   18.17
7   Marcus Camby   18.25
8   Andrew Bogut   18.58
9   Samuel Dalembert   18.58
10   Dwight Howard   18.63

Bottom 10 among PF/C for 2010-11

Code: Select all

57   Kurt Thomas   25.62
56   Shaquille O'Neal   25.19
55   Zydrunas Ilgauskas   24.62
54   Jason Collins   24.20
53   Channing Frye   24.09
52   DeJuan Blair   23.74
51   Jason Thompson   23.58
50   Shelden Williams   23.40
49   Robin Lopez   23.37
48   Chris Wilcox   23.28

Like I said, feeble attempt. There are curious cases on both lists. But I will point out Garnett is the top-rated PF on a list dominated by centers.
I was right about 3 point shooting. I expect to be right about Tacko Fall. Some coach will figure out how to use Tacko Fall. This movement towards undersized centers will sweep ng back. Back to the basket scorers will return to the NBA.

It was me that noted that KG's rotation speed and ability to diagnose what was happening disrupts plays before a shot gets off.

You know who else does that well? Tim Duncan. HE doesn't do it to quite the extent KG did, mostly due to lack of fluidity and footspeed (in comparison), but this ability to cut off guys before they can put a shot up is much better than recovering to challenge or block a shot IMO.

What's better than forcing a bad shot? Forcing a pass into a worse shot.

EvanZ, do you happen to have the average FGA+FTA by position, leaguewide?

Garnett is 4 on there with a bunch of centers, but I bet the average PF takes a fair deal more shots than the average C.

Here is by position (FGA+0.44*FTA)*100/POSS (i.e. normalized to 100 possessions):

PG: 19.3
SG: 19.4
SF: 18.3
PF: 18.1
C: 14.5

That's an average of all players. If I look at averages for starters (GS>average):
PG: 20.4
SG: 20.8
SF: 21.0
PF: 20.9
C: 17.1
I was right about 3 point shooting. I expect to be right about Tacko Fall. Some coach will figure out how to use Tacko Fall. This movement towards undersized centers will sweep ng back. Back to the basket scorers will return to the NBA.

So by position, KG has the highest ownage rating in the league? Lol, I like that term.

Well, the lowest ownage, to be precise.
