League-wide Shooting Statistics

Post#1 » by W Z » Sat Jun 4, 2011 2:10 am

Hey guys,

I've been looking for this everywhere and think it could serve as a very good frame of reference when I evaluate how well a player is doing, but haven't been able to find it anywhere.

Does anyone know where I can find FG%, 3PT%, eFG%, TS%, etc., for the entire league? What I mean is if combined all the shots by every player and calculated these stats as if this combination was a player. I think it would be a great benchmark to know for fans to be a better evaluators of how efficiently players are. Also, if you know where this could be found, are there splits for different positions as well?

Thanks

Go here: http://www.basketball-reference.com/lea ... _2011.html

Sort by the category of your choosing and basketball reference will display the league average.

Use the league average in conjunction with a couple basic formulas (http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/glossary.html) to calculate your desired stats. Of the ones you've requested, TS% is the only stat you'll need to calculate on your own.

IIRC, the league's average TS% is always around .540 or .545.

If there's a page that calculates league-wide TS% and other stats in an easy way, I'd love to know of it too!

Once again, basketball reference saves the day.

Hey,

You can go here: http://www.hoopdata.com/scoringstats.aspx and in the 'scoring' tab you will have both the league averages of TS%, eFG%, etc. along with every players' respective percentage. On top of this, you can look at the averages of these metrics by position, games played and minutes played. So if I wanted to look at the average TS% of every PG who played 25+ minutes I would sort it to that and see that the average is 54.3 (also the league average).

Hope that helped. :)
