Very High Usage -> bad team defense?

Post#1 » by giberish » Mon Aug 1, 2011 7:45 am

One theory that I've been thinking about but am too lazy to try and check.

Does having one player taking a lot of shots cause a drop in that team's defense? Ideally this would be checked game to game (or even quarter to quarter or something).

It seams that the high usage player is likely to 'conserve energy' defensively. Meanwhile the four other guys might have more energy for defense, but often get out of sync from standing around too much.

I've seen this in particular with two teams. The Lakers usually seem to get worse on defense when Kobe is in hero mode, compared to when he is working in the offense. This may be a cause of his relatively poor +/- stats as well. On GS, Monta makes the team significantly worse on defense yet (compared to other Warrior players at least) isn't obviously a poor defender. Notably, in 2008 and before, when Monta was an above-average but not extremely high usage player he rated as a decent defender. Perhaps it's not Monta making the team defense worse, but rather Monta shooting too much that makes the team defense worse.
