Expectations for Wall

Post#1 » by dangermouse » Sun May 23, 2010 3:10 am

I guess a lot rides on our offseason moves, but I could see John Wall having a big impact from day 1. Not as big as Chris Paul did in his rookie year, but bigger than his main comparison, Derrick Rose.

Rose put up 16.8 ppg shooting .47 from the field and .22 from 3.
I think Wall will be around the same, 18 ppg or so at the very best. I think he will average a little better from deep. I think he is already a better shooter than Rose was, but he knows he has to improve on it and is commited to doing so.

Rose had 3.9 rebounds per game, 0.8 steals, and 0.2 blocks.
4 rebounds per game is good for a PG, I guess it can depend on who you have on your team. The way its looking now I think Wall can average that or better. 2 steals a game is about right for Wall, the kid is quick and has great timing and anticipation. I'd expect him to get quite a few more blocks than Rose did.

Rose had 6.3 assists with 2.5 turnovers.
Again it depends on who he has running with him next season, but i could see him averaging more assists (and slightly more turnovers as a consequence). His court vision is better than Rose's was, easily.

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

Im guessing he will put up similar numbers next season to what Tyreke Evans put up this season.

Got it.

Hopefully, Blatche is not the one doing the introductions.

If the Wizards draft John Wall, I think he'll be good but I'm skeptical of the Wizards championship odds dramatically in the long run. Since 1993, there have been 4 guards taken in the top 5 that have even led their teams to the finals.

1993- Penny Hardaway (#2) - Orlando Magic (Yes he technically was drafted by Golden State but he was acquired and played the beginning of his career with Orlando)

1996- Allen Iverson - Philly

2003- Dwayne Wade (Miami, #5) - won it all

2004- Devin Harris (Dallas, #5, acquired by Washington in a pre-draft trade)

Yes, there have been other guards that have taken their teams to the finals; (ie Billups and Kidd) but did not take the team that drafted them into the finals. Bottomline, the Wizards have taken a step in the right direction, but they still need another topnotch talent to go along with Wall especially if he can't play alongside Arenas. I think there's a good possibility that an Arenas/Wall backcourt will click.

I think Wall wins the Rookie of the Year award, and makes it to the All-Star game NLT year 3.

He is not a better shooter that rose. That's walls biggest weakness. If he works at it during the off season why not.But not now.

Isn't this exactly what sells tickets? This is what I think the majority of people want to see whether they think it will work or fail, I don't see the negatives in allowing it to manifest on the court.

Wall will win the Rookie if the year. 15 ppg 7 apg 4 rpg 2 spg and a lot of highlights. He will have a Chris Paul like rookie season.

Better shooter than Rose was his rookie year. It's hard to shoot worse than 22% so I'd have to agree.

Oh yeah.

19ppg
7.4 assists
3.7 reb
2.3 stl
.7 blocks

He'll compete with Turner and maybe James Anderson for ROY.

I know fans are very excited about John Wall, but those numbers are almost unreachable expectations.

The rebounds and blocks seem reasonable given his length and athleticism.

Only 5 players have had 2.3 steals or more their rookie year. However that combination of points and assists is highly unlikely, for a rookie sharing the backcourt with Arenas. Since 1980 only 2 rookie guards have averaged more than 17 points and 6 assists and 1.75 steals. They were Iverson and Isaiah Thomas.

Prolly round 17pts, 7.1 ass and 3.7 rb, and a steal a game.

and i expect to make this my ring tone rather soon.

more than anything I would love to see him increase our win total significantly, maybe round 40-45 this season?

So basically you expect Iverson or Isiah Thomas' rookie season?

That is less than Iverson scored his rookie year. However I don't see him matching his assist total. Iverson played 40 minutes a game and the starting line-up was Stackhouse, Coleman, Scott Willams and Clarence Weatherspoon. Don MacLean was 6th man(20 mpg). With exception of Williams all of those players were at least decent scorers, but none of them racked up many assists.

When Arenas and Hughes were on the Wizards in 2004-5 they both had about 5 assists a game. I think the assist stats will similar for a Wall/Arenas backcourt.

I would be happy with 35-40 wins and improvement over the season. I am basing this on a Wall/Arenas back-court Thornton and some stopgap at SF, Blatche at PF, a stopgap Center and

15/4/5.5apg

i'm more concerned about how he plays defense, manages fast breaks, and shoots FTs. i'm expecting decent defense, whatever the opposite larry hughes would do, and hopefully an 80% clip on 5fta.
