Their schedule is pretty rough this month too, I think they play OKC next.

I hope they don't make the playoffs, I want to see Kobe blow up. And of course all those delicious Laker fanboy tears... mmmmmmmmm really hits the spot!

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

The Wiz had him in for pre-draft workouts but took Booker. Grevis had a lot of haters on the board at the time, but I always believed he could play at the next level.

Seeing the younger wizards vs the thunder and the rockets play the lakers last night...theyre game looked incredibly similar...they might can be the eastern rockets with defensive stopping power

Beal is no harden but hes getting there...(thunder knows this)
wall and lin is on par (hopefully wall improved jumper)
Webster = parsons (with more experience less confidence)
Seraphin = morris twin (Except softer)
Okafor = asik (oka has way more defense stopping power)
Pay your beals....or its lights out!!!
Bron, Bosh, Wade is like Mike, Hakeem, barkley...3 top 5 picks from same draft
mike, hakeem and Barkley on the same team!!!!

The Rockets average 107 ppg, 1st in the NBA.
The Wizards average 89.2 ppg, last in the NBA by a full 2 points.

On which top 3 defense did the Wizards score 100 against?

Our team in no way translates to that Rockets team for a bunch of reasons.

1 - Beal is not Harden. Not even close. Getting there? Maybe in the vaguest of senses that Beal compares favorably to a rookie Harden but Beal is not Harden.

2 - Wall is not Lin. Wall does a lot of things better but Lin's had many games with more made 3's than Wall did all of last season.

3 - Okafor may have more stopping power than Asik but he certainly doesn't have more rebounding power. Asik has been a dyson on the boards.

4 - The Bench. Toney Douglas shoots .400 from 3, Delfion shoots .392 from 3, and Greg Smith is averaging 16/11 per 36 on .655 shooting.

Ok.

First, FG% is an antiquated measure because it doesn't account for the 3pt shot. The better measure is effective field goal percentage (efg). Thunder ranks 6th in defensive efg.

Second, while field goal defense is the most important defensive factor, other things matter too. Specifically, the Thunder are 18th in defensive turnovers, 10th in defensive rebounding percentage, and 12th in sending opponents to the free throw line.

All of that gets tied together nicely in a single number -- defensive rating (which is points allowed per 100 possessions). The Thunder rank 9th, allowing 103.7 points per 100 possessions.

All of that before getting to the biggest fallacy in the point you're trying to make, which is that one game proves nothing. Not even if it's the most recent game.

In a sense, I agree with deneem4 that, when healthy, our team compares favorably to the Rockets. It's why I was so high on the Wizards preseason. I do think Wall is as good as, if not better than Lin. He could be a lot better depending on how he has improved in the offseason. Parsons might be a bit better than Webster, but not by much. Asik is better than Okafor, but we make up for it by having Nene, who is better than any big man on their roster by a country mile. They're struggling to find someone to fill the PF spot, as are we.

The big, huge, ginormous difference is the difference between Harden and Beal. Harden is the 2nd best SG in the league and arguably a top 5 player this year. Beal remains statistically a terrible player. He's had a nice 5 game stretch, but prior to that, he was easily the worst starting SG in the league and one of the worst players in the league playing 20 minutes or more. Even over the last 5 games, Beal has only been a serviceable starter and by no means a star. This isn't a criticism of Beal, one doesn't expect a 19-year-old to be a superstar. But the fact remains that he isn't close to the ball player that Harden currently is. He's not even in the same area code.

Here's how the Wizards and Rockets compare using PPA (my stat -- 100 = average; higher is better; 45 = replacement level):

Code: Select all

Player          POS     Tm      G       MPG     PPA
James Harden    SG      HOU     33      38.2    167
Greg Smith      C       HOU     29      14.4    161
Nene Hilario    PF      WAS     20      23.8    139
Emeka Okafor    C       WAS     33      23.9    113
PatrickPaterson PF      HOU     26      27.7    111
ChandlerParsons SF      HOU     33      36.2    109
Omer Asik       C       HOU     34      30.0    108
Jordan Crawford SG      WAS     31      29.8    100
Jeremy Lin      PG      HOU     34      33.0    94
Trevor Ariza    SF      WAS     16      24.3    94
Carlos Delfino  SF      HOU     25      25.2    92
Marcus Morris   PF      HOU     33      23.0    92
Martell Webster SF      WAS     32      27.1    84
A.J. Price      PG      WAS     18      27.1    84
Trevor Booker   PF      WAS     9       24.1    82
Toney Douglas   PG      HOU     33      20.3    77
Cartier Martin  SF      WAS     23      17.6    69
Bradley Beal    SG      WAS     31      31.3    65
Garrett Temple  PG      WAS     8       31.9    45
ShaunLivingston PG      WAS     17      18.8    38
Chris Singleton PF      WAS     28      17.2    33
Kevin Seraphin  C       WAS     32      25.3    27
Jan Vesely      PF      WAS     26      13.2    13

Minimum 200 minutes. Wizards have 7 least productive players in this comparison.

A healthy Wall would help some, but remember -- he rated right about average last season (which was better than his rookie year). If he made an Isiah-like leap from year 2 to year 3, his PPA would be ~125-130.

It was the first game the wix played with their younger players and without crawford portraying kobe...

The thunder have a top 5 shot blocker and stealer with a lock down defender in sefo...Please don't shoot down the thunder defense because its the wizards theyre playing

Asik gets so many rebounds because the rockets hsve sooo many shooters defenses usually are chasing shooters which leaves asik downlow...also with 3 euro stepping players penatrating his defender usually leaves him open for a rebound...sorts how varejaois with the cavs...also being 7" is a plus...

To look at beal game as he has been gaining confidence and getting used to the nba I will definitely say he can become a james harden next yr...he can average 23 a game...(and him and harden had the exact same poster dunk)...the thunder knows this...thats why they were going to trade james harden for him and singleton...hes only 19 and taking clutch shots...it's not like he was placed like lillard around a good team with a good coach and a star...he was placed on the worst scoring team nd told to be their #1 scoring option..I see him growing into it now

Webster is extremely talent just not confident in his self...if he plays more aggresively he can put up 17 a night with ease...

Nene is a great power forward...but I think he should come off the bench at center with crawford and seraphin at pf...that kid Is not a center

Wall/beal/webster/jan/okafor
Temple/crawford/ariza/seraphin/nene
Rotate singleton or booker if jan or seraphin is screwing up
Pay your beals....or its lights out!!!

Didn't shoot down the OKC defense at all. Their defense is good. Not top 3, but still good.

More importantly, one game means very little. It was nice, but it was just one game.

The Cats used their last two high draft picks on guys who could play defense (BB and MKG). They have Haywood who is a good defender. Why is their defense last in the league? Are their guards that bad?

Last year they had the worst offense now they have the worst defense. smh

I have to doff my cap. They really know how to tank. I think we will end up losing to them again.
