So it's full tears requiring surgery, not partial?

On ESPN'S radio they said his knee is worse than what they have told the public....so-far.

Nobody knows the extent of the damage at the moment. My understanding is that Dr. Andrews will examine him today. Right now, it's still rumor and speculation.

Those things have their place, but we'll have some real information soon enough.

They should have taken him out the moment the scored that 2nd TD and even that would have been a bit of a gamble. Cousins as a game manager as they ran out the clock with Morris and Royster would have been more than adequate. There's no way a hobbling and gimpy RG3 would have been better than a 100% Cousins.

This brings up one of my biggest peeves in sports. When someone is injured, coaches stick with the incumbent instead of going to the bench. It's a huge slap to the face to the 2nd string. The bench is there for a reason. Now Cousins did foul up bad but they threw him in there in the most intense pressure-filled situation imaginable. Having him end the 1st half with handoff, handoff, handoff would have been a much better way to ease him into the situation. I had a sinking feeling in my stomach the moment I saw that they were sticking with Griffin.

I didn't mind Shanahan sticking with Griffin for one more series after the TD. Apparently, Griffin was saying that his knee wasn't that bad and he could still play. But once it was obvious that Griffin could barely move or plant his weight on his foot, he should have been benched. I'm sure I wasn't the only fan screaming at the TV to get Griffin out of there.

Should have benched him after he ran for 9 yards and he was clearly limping. I can see why Shanahan would want to trust his player when says he can play, just like how I can see how RGIII wouldn't want to be pulled. I mean, remember all the **** Cutler got in the NFC Championship game two years ago when he got hurt but was seen walking on the sidelines? People in Chicago have questioned his toughness ever since.

Then again, Shanahan is also the guy who sent in Terrell Davis when Davis told him he couldn't see in the Super Bowl.

Going to the Wizards game cursed him.

Pretty sure (In Roberts case) either partial "or" full tears to the ACL will require reconstructive surgery.. But as long as we dont hear PCL, he should be able to fully recover in 8-14 months..

I was thinking the same thing. Cousins should have come in after the 2nd TD.
At that point, RGIII had given what he had to give.

See how well he recovers. AP has shown that seemingly catastrophic injuries
are not necessarily permanent in this day and age.

Is this official? I keep on seeing many different sources with different opinions. One will say ACL/MCL, the otherwill say partial ACL/LCL tear, etc. This article says he only has a partial LCL tear:

It's ACL/LCL. He apparently destroyed his former surgery on the ACL and LCL ruptured as well.

Your knee doesn't bend that way with a brace without a ligament rupturing.

Shanahan should be fired for that one. I ripped my bicep tendon about a year ago now, back to full strength but you should always put a full stop on a guy with reconstructive surgery on a ligament when there is pain not related to scar tissue.

Idiotic. If this turns out to be true, and after his first ACL surgery I wouldn't expect him back, if at all, for 2 years. Between shortening the ACL again and possibly grafting from the Achilles or a cadaver his explosiveness will be gone.

He did seem to have the intelligence to thrive as a in the pocket type of guy though.

I feel horrible for the man, reconstructive surgery is very painful for 4 weeks on the arm. But at least at 2-3 weeks you can take the brace off and start passive movements and keep some muscle. ACL surgery takes both legs to near nothing due to the 3-4 months in a cast.

Indu: Your information seems a bit...dated. Rehab starts on the same day as the ACL reconstruction surgery. Patients typically are on crutches for 7-10 days unless they also had mensicus repair or had another ligament reconstructed. In those cases, it might be 3-4 weeks on crutches.

Expectations nowadays are for people to return to sports approximately 6 months after reconstructive surgery. Maybe a little longer time if multiple ligaments need reconstruction.

my case is obviously completely different than RGIII but FWIW,
I ran a 50 miler 7 weeks after arthroscopy to repair a partial meniscus
tear. And I still appear (outwardly) to be fine running-wise.

You have to factor-in the Wizard curse rub-off, there's no telling what effect that ultimately will have on RGIII. :(
The entire event is sickening, everyone could see that he needed to come-out but Shanahan. I hope he doesn't end-up like Gilbert.

The Gil comparison is interesting. Posted something about it on the Skins board.

Nivek, your are correct. I could remove my brace after 2 weeks on my arm. "Passive movement" and massage was the "rehab" at that point. But I did not need a cast or anything after two weeks. My doctors were the same docs for the Knicks/Jets in NYC.

They said I needed 12 weeks before giving me the green light to lift heavy weights again. I broke the rules and started at 7 weeks. Went off many opinions online and the fact I was already extremely strong.

I didn't feel at 95% strength until 8 months however. I could bench 240 again 4 months later, but nothing felt "normal". Even today I realize my left arm will never "feel" the same. I don't have the same explosiveness in my upper body lifts. I can lift the same weight, just slower and more controlled.

For a leg? I can only imagine.....especially with two ligaments in the mix. With two ruptured ligaments I seriously question him being cleared to
undergo direct tackles in an NFL game in under 18 months.

Pull-ups are essentially forbidden with my rupture for 7 months. Even though the ligament is fused to the bone, everyone advises against "jarring" impacts. They are the only way to rerupture.......

Your first post sounded like what they did back in 1987 when I dislocated my knee and partially the ACL and a couple other ligaments. They had me in a soft cast from November to February and my thigh atrophied. The rehab protocols are MUCH better nowadays. For an elite athlete with access to the best specialists, care, etc., the rehab period is even faster.

That said, I'm worried as hell about Griffin's knee. This would be his 2nd ACL injury. Don't know how well guys recover from a second injury to the same ligament.
