Doc hits it on the head. I think Wizards fans are reluctant to get too emotionally invested in the team because when ever they do something to excite you, they go right back to disappointing you. If the Wizards start winning consistently and stop having let downs at home and against lesser teams, you will see a stronger more focal fan base. Bottom line...the fans don't trust this team yet.

Exactly. As I said in the game thread, we're passionate but cautious due to a long
history of being burned. So we root scared a lot of the time. Crowd came on strong
and showed appreciation down the stretch. Awesome game.

I'm not buying it. Many of the people in the arena don't follow the team so closely to the point that they're waiting to see the team win specific games in a certain fashion before knowing it's safe to get emotionally invested in them and root them on. You live by the moment. At the moment the Wizards are doing very well on the road, sit in fifth place and looked nearly perfect for long stretches against the world champions...of the NBA world. If you can't get excited over them beating down the defending champs, I don't see the sense in buying a ticket, leaving your house, and sitting through an hour and thirty minutes of basketball that has zero chance of impressing you.

The players have the million dollar contracts but the fans seem to have the egos...

I hate this thread. As someone who goes to a lot of games and tries to cheer as often as I can...you must be EXTREMELY careful about getting emotionally involved with this team at the game. People cheer hard when the Wiz are playing well, however their record over the years produces a fan that is numb. If they sustain their winning ways the crowd will come and get into it. However, this team has given ZERO reasons outside this season to go nuts. Last time I checked, we are still sub .500

The place was rocking in the fourth quarter last night.

I was there (friend sang the national anthem), and I don't think I was alone in expecting the Heat to make a HUGE comeback. Hard to get too excited. No fan base that has been practically ignored will do too much, no matter the game.

And for all I know, you've been recycling that same line since 1980. At some point you just have to become numb to your own numbness and break on through to the Perma-Mets of the 3rd Millennium. Remember, the more you cheer, the more tickets you buy, the more the Wizards seem like a marketable product, filling seats with screaming, smiling, telegenic phanz. That encourages the players, they win more, that raises ticket prices, encourages the owner that he was right all along, and he resigns EG to "stay the course." We all need to do our part. If you're not cheering as loudly as possible at all times for the Wizards, you're actually cheering for the visiting team.

Cheering as loudly as possible after building a 43-18 first quarter lead would be nice....

Blame Yourselves For Mediocrity

Post#70 » by milellie111 » Thu Jan 23, 2014 1:33 am

You want someone to blame? Blame yourselves, the fans. The Wizards might as well be playing the game in Boston. There is no homecourt advantage whatsoever here because of these lousy Washington area fans. How the home team starts out depends alot on the support from the fans. Some Wizards fans dont even arrive at the game till after halftime. Some are fooling around on the Acela lounge or in the hallways focused on stuffing their faces with chicken tenders or what cocktail to buy. Some have their faces buried in their Blackberry or iphone handling business matters. Some just show up to the game because its just something to do, like going to the movies. The rest just dont feel like coming out in the cold so they sell their tickets cheap on craigslist to some beer pocket hobo who knows nothing about basketball and just wants to get out of the house and show his girlfriend a good time. This is NOT a basketball city and the players know this. They can fell the energy when no one cheers for them until the 4th quarter and they are leading. The players owe the fans something? Well it works both ways. Its not like this team doesnt have a superstar (Wall) or players to get excited over (Beal, Ariza,Nene) or is 5th PLACE IN THE EAST!!

Meh. Being a fan isn't a job. It doesn't come with responsibilities like screaming yourself hoarse to support the team regardless of how crappy they play. For fans, the games are entertainment. If the team wants cheers and full-throttle support, they should do their jobs and give the fans something to cheer about.

It is, I'll grant you that. Or, it would be if the team was actually...you know...good. As it is, they're really, really mediocre, and that's being generous. The East is epically, historically weak. So, yeah -- it's nice they're going to be in the playoffs. It just isn't much of an achievement in such a piss-poor conference.

Is that post Doc made years ago about fanatical fans and how we need them still around anywhere?

We're gonna rock the house tonight.

I still remember going to Game 3 in 2005. Atmosphere was incredible.

When the Wizards are winning, the Phone Booth is a real tough place for opponents to play in.
Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.

Am I really the only one that remembers that post from Doc on fanatical
fandom and why we need it? I know it was many years ago but it was epic.

Come on, someone. Pine, Nate JRos, Kev...someone has GOT to remember that.
Doc?
