Grade the WIzards 2014 Offseason

Post#1 » by hands11 » Sat Jul 19, 2014 6:00 pm

Here we go. Cast your votes and break it down it you want.

The votes are changeable so if something still happens that changes your mind, not problem.

Or maybe a mod can add a poll to the 2014 Off-season Thread - Part II

So out of 100 pts - didnt want to carve is up into A plus, A, A Minus, etc. But you can do that in your posts.

100-90 A
89-80 B
79-70 C
69-60 D
59-50 E
49 or less F

A-

Didn't blow a long wad on Ariza (defense will be missed). But still need another guard...offensive combo guard.
Will you fools ever realize that when the cameras are on and the microphones are hot, they are Lying to you! Lying to illicit a prescribed reaction, to easier manipulate you.

B

Instead of paying Ariza $9 million, we got Pierce and Humphries at the same price basically.

Blair was a good get for the Maynor TPE from Philadelphia.

I think we need more wing help and a 3rd PG to develop behind Miller/Wall

But the front court is fine.

Otto Porter and Glen Rice look to be better players and I hope they etch out their roles in training camp in a couple months.

Wittman sucks as an offensive coach but he does get guys to play defense. So I'm hoping the defense remains where it was in the top 10 and Otto splits minutes with Paul Pierce at the SF spot.

We have legit Nene insurance now which is nice to see.

B-

Resigning Wittman = B-

Selling draft pick = F

Resigning Gortat to 60M = C+

Signing Pierce = B+

Signing Humphries = A

Signing Blair = B+

Signing Gooden = C+ (what the hell is the point)

Resigning Temple = C

Extending QO to Seraphin = D+

No shotblocking/wing defender will be a huge problem.

A-/B+ (but I'm clicking B, because a straight up A looks a little too flawless).

Don't agree point by point with FAH1223 and TGW, but agree with much of the sentiment. I graded higher because, while I didn't like everything (like, no draft picks), I saw no major blunders (didn't hate Gortat's contract like some did), and I saw EG and the front office apparently showing more creativity than I've generally seen in the past. No blockbuster acquisitions, but I'm a little more confident that the Wizards might be a serious player in the future acquisition of Durant or some other major piece via signing or trade.

Of course, the last 35 years of Bullets/Wizards fandom and the last ten years of EG have produced a lot of PTSD, and that's not going away overnight. I dread what's just around the bend, but right this second looks a little better.

A solid B. One extra year on the Gortat deal and the QO offer to Seraphin are the only things I can complain about. Everything else has been solidly above expectations.

I give them an A.

Great Moves:
Blair- Criminally low salary for a productive big.
Hump- Pseudo floor spacer. Makes for a good replacement for Nene when he is out. Very fair deal.
Gooden- Super cheap quality big man.
Pierce- Still an effective player at 37. Can play some stretch 4. He will help close out games. Didn't overpay
Letting Book walk- He was a decent player here, but Hump and Blair are cheaper and better.

OK moves:
Gortat- 12M per year is fine, 5 year length is scary
Temple- A terrible offensive player, but fills a roll of perimeter defensive stopper
Seraphin- not crazy about this, but he makes for a decent 6th big
Letting Ariza Walk- This will hurt in the short term, but with Otto on board no need to overpay

Bad moves:
No first
Selling 2nd

Ultimately what puts them over the top is the sense this team has a goal for the future. All moves this off-season point towards KD being a major FA agent target 2 years from now. Add to that an already decent young core of Wall, Beal, and Porter and things are looking up for Wizards fans.

B. We were wholesale changing the bench but then we hold on to Temple and Kev? What for? Haven't seen anything out of them for the past two seasons that leads me to believe they'll contribute anything. Ernie teased then got lazy.

B-. Team seems marginally improved with better frontcourt depth but but we will still won't win 50 games, even in a **** conference and with Wall and Beal improvement.

Best part of the offseason was Ernie not screwing up the chance at 2016.

B+
The good
Let ariza go we drafted a sf in a draft where we couldve got a big man of the future might as well let him play
Signed paul pierce, leader championship experience clutch guy, exactly what we needed vs indiana
Blair/humpries 2 tough bigs that can rebound...humpries got a little jumper and Blair can score inside good depth
kept seraphin, him next to Blair or humpries will be good, he also may be valuable doing the deadline

the bad
kept nene and webster, we have bigs now nene should be gone he's just holding up cap, I doubt he'll play when he gets back from Brazil
gortat for 5 yrs...he's good but come on, did we even try to make an offer to monroe??

In between
Kept Andre Miller for 5mil. But i guess he can be trade value I hope he's jus a 5mil expiring

overall b+
we set ourself up to be one of the better teams in the east with a deep bench. No one's going to like us this yr but that's good
Pay your beals....or its lights out!!!
Bron, Bosh, Wade is like Mike, Hakeem, barkley...3 top 5 picks from same draft
mike, hakeem and Barkley on the same team!!!!

A

The FO showed they have a long-term plan. They made moves that help us remain competitive in the short term but stick with the plan. Freeing up time for Otto is big; structuring deals so we have max cap room when Durant is a UFA is big. Doing both at the same time while staying competitive was a difficult task, but the FO executed exceptionally well.

My only quibble is that I wish we could have ended up with Asik instead of Gortat, or that we had Gortat but paid him less.

Voted an A, but really a A-. You guys need another pg. Looks like w/ Webster out, Miller Rice Porter Blair Hump will be the bench crew. Gooden & Seraphin as insurance on the 3rd string is awesome. Once Webster comes back & Rice goes to 3rd string, you guys will be crazy deep. Need another PG though. Miller is one type of pg, but obviously has his flaws & he's old. A young 3rd stringer will be great w/ Miller Cassell & Wall to learn from.

Didn't get KD. F.

Gortat was 13th in the league in bpg and Wall and Beal are both pretty good from the perimeter. I mean we weren't a great shot blocking team last season T-15th (4.6) but we had a positive block differential because we don't get many shots blocked (3.9; 7th best)

I was pretty similar on grading with TGW. I don't mind signing Gooden, so I probably would have bumped that grade up some. If we had lost out on Blair or Humphries, that would have changed my opinion of the move.

A guard was needed, but I don't think Temple was a good choice. A guard was needed, but a shooter would have been a better choice.

That makes sense; long 2s don't get blocked that often. ;)

I voted B. While I would've liked to see us get a shotblocker and a young scatback third PG for our bench, we have tradable assets that might net us one of those types down the line, should the team decide we really need one.
