Washington Wizards forward Paul Pierce has decided to play next season but is expected to bypass his $5.5 million player option, according to two people with knowledge of the situation. The decision, which is due by the end of the month, would make Pierce a free agent for the second straight year.

We desperately need wings. Webster is done, Butler is a FA/old... and that's all we have behind Otto.

After having Pierce on my underachieving Nets for a year and witnessing his awesome play and clutchness as a vet, I was hoping to see him stay more than a year at the Wizards especially after his playoff run with Wall and co.

I assume this means he's going home to LA because that's the only reason I can think of for why he'd leave you guys.

PP wears Celtic gear too sometimes. PP will sign for less $$ to go to a contender, last shot for him.

One of those rare situations where it both sucks to lose a player yet I hold no ill will toward him for leaving. I can only appreciate what he contributed to our team for the year he was here.

Hope he can win another title next year in L.A because the guy is a class act.

This seems like a logical move, but not one that necessarily means PP is going to LAC. How good the Clippers will be next year depends on whether Jordan resigns, and it appears he hasn't made up his mind. I see this as PP keeping his options open. He knows the Wizards will resign him for a year at $5.5 million, so there is no downside to opting out.

Also, this leaves open the possibility of a sign and trade.

There is big downside for the Wizards to using the MLE to re-sign any 37 year old. Otto has stepped forward. Now that Pierce is opting out, the Wizards need to move on from him. I would have liked to have kept him for one more year, but oh well.

This leaves a big fat hole on the wings. Beal and Porter can't play 48 minutes a night. We need another starting-caliber guy, even if he can only play 20-25 minutes a game.

I think the best option out there is Matt Barnes. He was traded to Charlotte and they reportedly don't want him. He has one non-guaranteed year left on his deal at just $3.5M. Rather than Charlotte cutting him, why don't we just trade our TPE for him? It gets us one more veteran wing while keeping the MLE available for a big or a combo guard.

I think this is a great idea. Barnes is one of those players you hate unless he plays on your team. We could use one of those guys, to be honest.

Pierce owning the raptors on the court and on social media is one of my favorite highlights as a Wizards fan. It didn't inspire hope of a championship or of a brighter future, but in that moment, I experienced pure fandom glee.

Aren't you'll jumping the gun a little..

I mean he might not stay but as of right now, he hasn't even opted out.

All we know is that he is playing again next year. And he was at a boxing match sporting his Wizards/Bullets hat with someone else sporting a DC hat.

Now if he does opt out and leave, there are options out there that are interesting for sure so they should be ok but as of right now...

THE TRUTH IS A WIZARD and has a contract. And we can pay him more. And he likes it here.
