Deon Long is actually 21 years old. It only seems like he's 30.

The headliner of this year's Rivals.com junior college Top 100 has lugged around a load of buzz for years. He was a certifiable high school star. At one time, he was the No. 1 prep school player in America. He made a brief stop at the University of New Mexico, and now he's the country's top junior college prospect.

The Iowa Western wide receiver's road to the BCS level wasn't short, but every winding inch of it was decorated with accolades.

Long was the same old Long this season. Sub-4.4 speed? Check. A pair of NJCAA records? Check. A junior college national title? You get the point.

Impressive as his season was, though, it somehow seems even more so when his position coach offers some perspective. Long may be the oldest player in this year's ranking, but it might be wise to hold off on the corny over-the-hill jokes.

"He did all it while only playing in two fourth quarters all year," said Iowa Western offensive coordinator Mike Strohmeier. "He was actually pulled by halftime in most games. I truly believe he will make an immediate impact at Maryland."

There's little reason to question Strohmeier's projection. Long racked up 100 receptions for 1,626 yards and 25 touchdowns this season. All three statistics ranked first among junior college players. Early in the year, he hauled in 20 passes in a single game. His stats only restate everything people knew long ago: Deon Long is a special talent. Always has been. Always will be.

There's a reason he's the first five-star junior college prospect since Cameron Newton.

"He has shown he can do it at all levels," said Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell. "He has taken a very, very roundabout route to college. But we feel he's the kind of player that can come right in at Maryland and be an all-conference difference maker and in a year or two be an NFL first-round talent."

A former Terp is doing well in the NBA.

The NBA announced today that New Orleans Hornets guard Greivis Vasquez was named the Western Conference Player of Week for games played Monday, December 24, through Sunday, December 30. This is the first time in Vasquez’s career that he has won a Player of the Week honor.

Vasquez led the Hornets to a 2-1 record, averaging 21.0 points, 10.0 assists, 6.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals while shooting 53.1 percent from the field. The Hornets guard recorded a career-high 27 points to go along with eight assists and six rebounds in a win over the Orlando Magic on 12/26. In the following contest, Vasquez narrowly missed recording his first career triple-double with 20 points, 14 assists and a career-high nine rebounds. In his final contest of the week, Greivis recorded 16 points, eight assists, four rebounds and four steals while guiding the Hornets to a win over the Charlotte Bobcats on 12/29 despite being down as many as 21 points. Through the end of the week, Vasquez ranked fourth in the NBA in assists per game (8.8)

Pretty dominant performance today against VT. We have one of the deepest teams in college basketball.

I'll say this -- If Len can be swayed to stay one more year and with the stud point guard we're getting next season, they could bring a title to UMD.

But I don't think Len is staying.

Understandable but from a basketball standpoint, disappointing. He clearly needs more polish and I think he'd be doing a disservice to himself to leave after this season.

Len would make a mistake by not going. Wiggins would be the #1 pick this year. No way Len would go #1 next year (maybe not #2 with Parker).

Man, never underestimate Ken Pomeroy's ranking system! The Terps are as bad as he rates them, apparently.

I did not see this game. (Comments below are my subjective opinion based on things leading up to this game).

What stats suggested before this game were that Pe'Shon Howard is a self-check on offense and so is Nick Faust. Logan Aronhalt is a one-trick shooter. Seth Allen is extremely turnover prone. Shaq Cleare, apparently, is not a D-1 level talent. He is very overrated. Charles Mitchell can rebound but is an atrocious free throw shooter. The worst part is their most athletic player, Dez Wells lacks skill as a passer and he as no three point shot.

To beat the Terrapins you simply play a very physical game on Len and you allow Howard, Wells, and Faust to launch from outside. Maryland can be had by quicker, more reliable ball handlers, and a strong swing player with height. Dez Wells can't create and can do nothing without the ball. Deny him and body Len.

i was a little worried Stony Brook played them closely. I relaxed and thought they were pretty good the way they handled Virginia Tech. However, Tech is a LOUSY team.

Kenpom had the Terps having faced ridiculously easy foes, and even Kentucky is way out of their top 25.

The Terps have their work cut out for them. The good news is perhaps Len will look bad enough to want to stay another season. Dodd and Peters (who's having/had shoulder surgery) are better talent and guys like Mitchell, Allen, and Layman will be joined by Smotrycz.

They are a really young team that needed a test like this. This is the best defense they've faced all year. They'll be fine. They weren't going to cruise to a 13-5 ACC record. There will be bumps along the road but I think they'll be fine.

Man, Seth Allen had a great final minute (including a clutch 3 and an even more clutch 3pt play) but that last play was abysmal -- the height of hero-ball nonsense.

MD's got great depth, but they've got problems they're not going to solve this season.
1. They have no point guard.
2. Their starters can't shoot jump shots to save their lives.
3. They have nobody that can create their own offense when the offense gets stagnant. Allen's the closest thing right now, and he's a freshman who plays like a freshman. Wells could be that guy, but he's gotta be at least 25 lbs overweight.

Next year, they should be much better - even if Len leaves.

Len's double-double tonight may have been one of the worst I've seen. He should've had 20-20 tonight. Pe'Shon Howard is terrible IMHO, there's nothing in his game that warrants him being a starter and playing 25mpg. CCJ Seth Allen is turnover prone but he can create his own shot and penetrates to the cup. For someone being so hyped as a star, Wells has to extend his shot to the 3pt. line for this team to have a chance. Faust is a chucker, Logan is the specialist, Layman is Layman and Shaq Cleare isn't playing like a guy named Shaq. Mitchell rebounds which the team needs so I'll leave him be.

Tough game to lose after carrying play early, but this is a young team. They'll learn from this and only get better and better. Fear the Turtle!

+1

This team will beat most with their size and rebounding depth. Our lack of 3 pt shooting and PG play is a concern but that's a next year sort of concern.. can't fix it this year with Howard starting

Yeah, I was hoping Howard would take a step up this season - the team needed him to in order to be an elite team. It just hasn't happened on a consistent basis. He's the only true PG on the team. Allen is more of a 2 and is really just an immature freshman with potential - at this point.

Howard is just physically and mentally not able to play at a high division 1 level right now. No jump shot, can't penetrate, poor decision making. He seems like a nice guy but he can't play at this level.

Yeah, he showed some signs as a freshman, but he hasn't developed even a little bit since then.
