Wiz-Board Rules, Links, Traditions and HOF Posts Thread

Post#1 » by miller31time » Mon Jan 26, 2009 2:16 am

As one poster of this forum once said, the Wizards Board is by far the easiest board to moderate because the posters are a class above most and basically self-moderate. But with the recent registration of new users who might not be accustomed to the rules and traditions of this board, the same rules and traditions that the regulars already know and practice, I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread detailing just what said rules are.

First and foremost, all posters must follow the Terms Of Service RealGM has provided. Here is the link for those who have yet to read it. By failing to abide by these rules, you face the possibility of warnings, suspensions or a permanent ban.

RealGM Terms of Service

Now let's go over the main rules of the Washington Wizards Board.

Da' Rules

1. Above all else, stay classy. There are going to be trolls who will have some negative (and sometimes idiotic) things to say. Well, instead of responding to them, simply report them using the (!) button located at the top of their post. In essence, there’s no need to make an already bad situation worse than it currently is.

2. No Fist-fights. I really don’t want to see any attacking of the posters on your own board, either. Of course there will be disagreements – it’s sports, that’s what it’s about! But disagree in a way that’s respectful to that poster.

3. No trolling. If you’re going to venture to other teams’ boards, follow the theme of this thread and do so in a respectful way. Comments that derail a thread or tick off that team’s posters will not be tolerated.

4. No Spamming. The site you're on is RealGM and we really don’t want posters signing up for the sole purpose of advertising their own personal site (or another site they belong to).

5. When posting articles from other sites…

A) Make sure they aren’t from subscription sites such as “NBA Insider.”
B) Quote no more than 3 paragraphs of text.
C) Provide a link to the article.

6. Don’t start repetitive threads. If there is a topic such as "The Official Wizards Trade Thread”, don’t start a thread titled “My John Wall Trade”, etc. Try to keep thread ideas new, in order to bring new information to the reader.

If you have any questions about how we do things around these parts, feel free to post them in this thread, or PM me. I'm always open to suggestions, as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wizards Board Tradition

1. Thou shalt never use the phrase "____ sucks." Rather, use the phrase "____ is suck."

2. Gamethread creators are first-come, first-serve. Whoever posts the gamethread first gets it stickied (placed at the top of the page). If the Wizards win, the same poster creates the next gamethread. If the Wizards lose, that poster cannot create the next gamethread for fear of angering the sacred basketball god and by that, I obviously mean Laron Profit.

What's this 'stay classy' crap? This board has a strong tradition of being far more tolerant with trolls than other boards, hell we kept SD20 alive for years before he self-destructed. We also tend to be more hilarious, clever, sardonic, occasionally profane and willing to have a friendly dust-up with a misguided fan of another team. No big deal, just get your facts straight and be interesting. Bring some content. Some information. If all else fails be funny, creative, descriptive. Just please gawds don't be boring.

There's also a powerful tradition of scholarship and fact based argument 'round here. Stat-happy. Might as well learn something. Links below for datamining and self-edumacation:

I'd also suggest we let this thread also serve as a Hall of Fame, thread for instant classic posts. How else to understand what we value in the 'culture' of this board. Que no?

Miller - here are a couple of submissions for the "links" if you want to update your post.

For when people start caring about the team/ season again and want to talk strategy:

Armchair Coaching, Scouting, etc

Might make sense to merge the "This is how the lineup should be thread" with the above.

Wiz in the Media Thread -Eventually this puppy might drop off the first page but I like the idea of having a consolidated thread for this type of stuff.

Doc -- found the two you wanted to flag:

Confessions of WizBoard Superhero that swears this is a true story

Agreed.

Miller - any update on when the old archives will ever become available again? Or is it safe to say they've disappeared for good, swallowed up by cyberspace black hole. There are a couple posts in particular that I think should be resurrected, if only because they were so entertaining at the time. For instance, the thread for the Wiz/Bulls playoff series should be preserved for posterity's sake, as it represented a high point (in terms of collective board enthusiasm).

top of head, Other threads worth resurrecting for history's sake might include:

* The game thread for MJ's first game in a Wizards uni.
* any thread featuring G2K (or any of his other various identities) laying the smack down on trolls
* any thread featuring the poster formerly known as Fokus sparring with SD20. Classic stuff.
* Two classic Doc posts come to mind: the one in which he talked the suicidal emo kid (GiltwanButler was it?) off the ledge; and the one in which he eulogized Sean Taylor.

It'd be a shame to think these were gone forever.

I've brought this up with the admins a few times and have been sort of brushed off each time. They usually say something like "We don't plan on bringing them back right now but will look into it later". I pretty much take that as "It ain't happening".

I'll ask again though, because it would be downright wrong to lose those threads.

I will say that it has a better chance of happening if you guys petition for it on the feedback and suggestions board (along with what I'll say to the admins). They usually take action for reasonable requests on the feedback and suggestions board.

EDIT: I just found the thread I made on the mod board a few months ago. Here is the response from Howard Mass (admin)....

Howard Mass wrote:Right now, it cannot be accessed.

We hope to have it up as soon as possible but there is no timetable for that.

Funny stuff in that forum. A guy named Pats19andO requesting a name change. Ditto a guy who misspelled his own name. Also this bit of high comedy in a thread asking why all mods are homers:

Bulletproof32 gets to christen the HOF thread.
