"A federal judge ruled against the NCAA Friday in the O'Bannon trial, calling NCAA rules that prohibit players from profiting on their own likenesses a violation of antitrust law.

In the ruling, U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilkin issued an injunction preventing the NCAA "from enforcing any rules or bylaws that would prohibit its member schools and conferences from offering their FBS football or Division I basketball recruits a limited share of the revenues generated from the use of their names, images, and likenesses in addition to a full grant-in-aid."

Under the ruling, the NCAA will be allowed to set rules that limit the amount of athletes can be paid while in school, as long as the cap is not "below the cost of attendance, as the term is defined in its current bylaws."

The ruling will not take effect until the next recruiting cycle for football and basketball."
