Extension/Extend and trade restrictions

Hi guys,

Mike Tokito just tweeted that in the face of Portland's offer to Hibbert that Indiana could just extend Hibbert. Two questions on this:

1) Can Hibbert be extended now? My understanding is an extension for a rookie contract must occur during the third year of the agreement. We're now in the fourth year of Hibbert's if I understand this correctly (the contract years change July 1, right?), so my understanding is it is too late for Indiana to pull a Hill on Hibbert.

2) Assuming for a moment that Hibbert could be extended, could he be extended and still traded to Portland? Larry Coon's FAQ says:

A player cannot be traded in an extend-and-trade after the season (for example, on draft day) in the last season of his contract, or in any season that might be the last season due to an option or ETO.

Does being an RFA count as a situation where a player "might be in the last season"?

He restricted, so in essence he doesn't have a current contract to extend, or to worry about extending and trading.

So, Indy can sign and trade him, sign him outright (for up to 5 years), or match an offer he signs by another team. {With some of those options obviously dependent upon Hibbert}

Hill was a similar situation, and Indy gave him a new contract for 5 years, not an extension.

Totally understand that, and I wasn't thinking that Indiana would match an offer sheet from Portland and then trade Hibbert. My thought was that Hibbert agrees not to sign the offer sheet if Indiana signs him to a contract that Portland would have offered, then trades him to Portland. Since no formal offer sheet would have been signed, the restriction on match and trade is moot.

Yes, if Indy decides it doesn't want to pay Hibbert a max salary, they can reach an agreement with Hibbert and Portland to sign and trade him to the Blazers. Plus the Pacers get a TPE.

Miami did a similar thing with Cleveland and Toronto after LeBron and Bosh agreed to sign with the Heat.

Yes, if Indy decides it doesn't want to pay Hibbert a max salary, they can reach an agreement with Hibbert and Portland to sign and trade him to the Blazers. In this way Hibbert can sign for an additional year with larger raises. Plus the Pacers get a TPE.

You forgot the new rules change ...The new CBA eliminated that possibility. He gets the same contract via s-n-t or via simple free agent signing.
