How does this trade work under the cap?

Raymond Felton
Kurt Thomas
for
Jared Jeffries
Dan Gadzuric
Kostas Papanikolaou
Giorgos Printezis
Future second-round draft pick (protected??)

It is a S&T and Knicks are over the cap so Knicks outgoing salary has to match the salary they receive. And, since it’s a S&T, the Knicks have to send the Blazers either a TPE or 1 player that matches Felton’s salary. As far as I know, the Knicks didn't have a TPE. So, that means Jeffries and Felton's salaries must match. People are assuming Jeffries is getting $1.35M and that is not possible considering the reports on what Felton is getting. And, that is another problem. The range between the reported high and low salary that Felton is supposedly getting is huge but the lowest I read is about $2.5M. Something doesn't add up because as reported this trade isn't valid.

And, what is a protected 2nd round pick? Is it a conditional 2nd round pick and misreported?

Best as I can figure it, here are the general parameters of that trade's numbers. If we ever get a reliable number for Felton's total contract or 1st year, the rest can be calculated from that. But I've seen 10M and 10.5M over 3 years, and "almost 18M" over 4 years, as his supposed deal, so who knows.

CONTRACTS

Jeffries 1,622,617 at most (120% of prior year)
Gadzuric 1,352,181
TOT 2,974,798

Felton max 1st yr 3,818,498 (125% + 100K of Total from NY)
...max Felton total 4 yr deal 16,304,986
...max Felton total 3 yr deal 11,970,991
...Felton could have gotten any number less than these
Thomas 1,352,181

TRADE (this is going to be exactly how it worked, even if we don't know the exact numbers ...the possibie variations in the numbers above don't change any of the below)

NY gets
Raymond Felton ...added by TPEs from Jeffries + Gadzuric as shown above
Kurt Thomas ...added by min salary exception

Portland gets
Jared Jeffries ......added by TPE from Thomas
Dan Gadzuric ...added by min salary exception
TPE for 3,818,498 (or less) (Felton)
Kostas Papanikolaou ...unsigned draftee rights, no exception required
Giorgos Printezis ...unsigned draftee rights, no exception required
Future second-round draft pick (protected??) ...pick, no exception required

Protected pick would mean it goes to Portland if it isn't in the top X picks. In other words, it can be delayed until it falls outside the protected range.

Is the maximum number for Felton 3,818,498 - 1,352,181, or is Thomas like a separate trade using VME?

Edit: OK, I see you answered that

I was thinking salaries of multiple players couldn't be combined to get a larger salaried player in a S&T. I think I confused combining traded players with combining TPE's.

Using the info Dunkenstein provided, here's the trade.

NY gets
Raymond Felton ...added by TPEs from Jeffries + Gadzuric
Kurt Thomas ...added by min salary exception

Portland gets
Jared Jeffries ......added by TPE from Thomas
Dan Gadzuric ...added by min salary exception
TPE for 3,480,453 (Felton)
Kostas Papanikolaou ...unsigned draftee rights, no exception required
Giorgos Printezis ...unsigned draftee rights, no exception required
Future second-round draft pick (protected??) ...pick, no exception required

I may be wrong, but since Portland was far enough under the cap when the Felton deal went down, Portland was able to get Jeffries and Gadz just using cap room. And because they were under the cap, I don't believe that they got a TPE for trading Felton.

The Blazers definitely under the cap and had room to absorb the contracts of Jeffries and Gadzuric.

They still have cap room after matching the offer sheet to Batum and signing Price.

Still, it was nice to see the trade math since most of the time teams are over the cap.

Have they signed anyone with more-than-MLE money? Sometimes teams appear to be under the cap, but aren't. I haven't looked at Portland's off-season, but I know the Mavs were actually far over the cap for some time - with the potential of staying there - when most thought they were under. (They've gone under the cap now, fwiw.) The same may be true of the Blazers, I dunno.

The highest paid player they signed this summer was Joel Freeland for around $3M. They have not been near the salary cap all summer.

As far as I can tell from the information that is out there, the Blazers have about $3.2M room after matching Batum and signing Ronnie Price.

Either Shamsports or here confirms most of the numbers I’m using. The only numbers that are unconfirmed are Batum $10.7M, Claver $1.3M, and Barton $474k. Claver’s salary looks like a wild guess. Other than that, it looks like it should be solid information.

I think Olshey believes salaries are too high this summer. He also expressed a preference for either spending big for an impact player or going cheap.

Victor Claver got $1.3 million, $1.33 million, $1.37 million, all guaranteed and without options.

Is Claver on a rookie 1st round pick contract or was he signed with cap room?

Since he was not signed within the three years of being drafted, he was able to opt-out of the rookie scale format and Portland signed him as a free agent using cap room.

Larry explains how that works in the last paragraph of #49.
