Question on waivers/min salary players

Post#1 » by coyotes_geek » Mon Jul 15, 2013 9:52 pm

Referring to CBA FAQ #63 about waivers and when teams can claim a player...

"A team can claim a waived player before he clears waivers only if one of the following is true:

* The team is far enough under the salary cap to fit the player's entire salary.

* The team has a Disabled Player exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 25), and the player is on the last season of his contract.

* The team has a trade exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 83).

* The player has a minimum salary contract. "

In this instance does "minimum salary contract" simply mean any contract that is paying the player the league minimum salary, or is it specifically referring to a contract that was given using the minimum player salary cap exception? Or put in other words, can a team that is over the cap / no trade exception / no disabled player exception claim a player making the league minimum amount regardless of whether that player was signed using the min salary exception, cap room, MLE, etc? Or are they only able to claim players that were signed using the min salary exception?

They can claim any player who makes the league minimum, regardless of whether or not he was signed by his original team using the minimum salary exception.
