How Many Roster Holds do you need 12 or 13 ?

Take Dallas for instance

1-Ellis
2-Calderon
3-Larkin
4-Mekel
5-Ellington
6-Ledo
7-Crowder
8-Wright
9-Dalembert
10-Boston Pick $491,000 Cap Hold
11-Dallas Pick $491,000 Cap Hold

All under contract

Do they need 1 more Roster Hold or 2 ? I have always thought it to be 1 so if they have $30,968,000 in Cap space you would have to subtract 1 Roster hold from cap space . But as soon as you sign that 12th player you would get that back

So Dallas signs Dirk $10 Million they should have $20,968,000 in Cap Space and no Roster Holds with $12 Players

Is this correct or do you charge for the 13th Spot ?

You are essentially correct.

Prior to the opening of the season, a team needs a combination of twelve 1) players under contract, 2) unsigned first round draft picks and 3) incomplete roster holds. Recently drafted, yet unsigned 2nd round draft picks would fit in the third group. A team must have a minimum of 13 players under contract on opening night.

While it is true that the number for an incomplete roster hold was $490,180 in the summer of 2013, next season the number will be raised to $507,336. This number is the same as the minimum salary of a second round draft pick.

I concur with what Dunk has said, and have another point to add re your list...

The list you offered is somewhat incorrect, although it doesn't change the bottom line. There is no cap hold for a 2nd round pick, so those 10th and 11th slots would be the same cap hold as for an empty space.
