New York Knicks 2015 Cap Space

Post#1 » by sportscrazy » Wed Mar 18, 2015 5:42 pm

This assumes the Knicks land the first overall draft pick, extend the QO to Alexey Shved and hold Cole Aldrich's bird rights:

Carmelo Anthony, $22,875,000
Jose Calderon $7,402,812
Tim Hardaway Jr., $1,304,520
Langston Galloway, $845.059
Cleanthony Early, $845,059

1st Overall Draft Pick, $4,753,000
Alexey Shved QO, $4,102,570
Cole Aldrich Cap Hold, $947,276

Four Empty Roster Spots @ $525,093 each, $2,100,372

Assuming a $66.5 Million salary cap, the Knicks should have $21,324,332 in cap space plus their Cap MLE to spend.

Is this all correct?

The math seems right to me. I don't know that they keep a Cap Hold for Aldrich. He seems like a Minimum guy going forward, so no reason to keep his rights. Might has well free up the extra 400k in space.

Please keep the FA chatter, as far as who may go where, to the Trades and Transactions board or the Knicks board. This board is for CBA related discussion. Thanks!

Since Shved will be a free agent with full Bird rights and not coming off a rookie scale contract, won't his cap hold will be 190% of his previous salary ($6,235,908)? See Coon's FAQ #38.

Yes that is the correct Cap Hold for Shved. I think he might be assuming that Shved signs his QO for the ~4 million amount.

While you guys debate Schved's cap hold, maybe I'm myopic but I seriously believe it will be $0. I can't see them offering a QO of over $4M (lest he take it), and see no reason they'd tie up $6M in rights so as to be able to play him even more than that $6M-ish number.

This I agree with you on 100%. I think he is non-tendered. They will have ways to bring him back if they want.

In the unlikely case of either LaMarcus Aldridge or Marc Gasol considering the Knicks in free agency, what are the MAX deals NY could offer both broken down year by year for the four year contract?

We won't know until the Cap figures are released. Max contracts are tied to a percentage of the Cap, or more accurately to BRI. The percentage for both players is 30%, as both are in the 7-9 year veteran range after this season.

The last officially released estimate was a Cap of $66,500,000.00 so that would put the Max first year salary of $19,950,000.00. As noted above, this is a rough approximation as it isn't exactly 30% of the Cap.

The maximum raises would be 4.5% each year. So, in this example it would look like:

1. $19,950,000.00

2. $20,847,750.00

3. $21,745,500.00

4. $22,643,250.00

But, I can't emphasize enough that is a very rough estimate. Some are projecting the Cap line to be closer to 78 million, which would change the numbers quite a bit.

Really? Who?

I haven't seen a single guesstimate by a numbers-oriented NBA guy that sees anything but an "ordinary" raise this year, and all indications are that any fiddling with the cap calculation is already off the table. That would put the cap this summer in the 66-68M range, apparently.

I've seen that 78 thrown around a few places. I should clarify that I think it will probably be about 68, with an upper bound of 70.

Yeah I see your point on credibility. Most of the guys I trust are saying 66-68. And, as I said, I think it settles around 68.
