Well yeah. If they keep AA, they'll sign him from cap room. Having a cap hold for him will be useless, whether they want to sign him or don't.

Let's say the Knicks kept the cap hold for Lance Thomas, could they reach the salary cap minus his cap hold and then re-sign him to a deal over the cap? If so, what is the MAX first year salary they could put on the deal given his early bird status?
