I am pretty sure that we have discussed this before (I couldn't find any threads older than the begining of this year), but I was just looking for some clarification regarding how to handle all of the players that were recently waived.
I know that salary under a "summer contract" does not count towards the salary cap, but exactly what constitutes a "summer contract"? For example are the contracts that the Lakers signed CJ Giles, Brandon Heath & Dwayne Mitchell to considered a summer contracts?
My thinking is that they are in fact "summer contracts" because the players in question did not make the regular season roster, but I would like some confirmation if that is correct.
In the case of a player like Juwan Howard, who supposedly had a non-guaranteed vet-min contract, made the regular season roster, and then was waived, I assume his salary would have to be prorated. I think the proration is based on the number of days in the NBA season, which for this season is 170 (correct me if I'm wrong). That would make Juwan's salary cap cost about $28,150 = [(170/6)*$797,581]. Let me know is this seems correct as well.

Re: Questions regarding "summer contracts"
Since I got so many responses to my previous post, I have a few more questions that have come up as I have been updating my spreadsheet...
1. I was under the impression that Chris Richard signed via his QO with Minnesota. If that is the case, wouldn't that make his salary guaranteed? I didn't see anything specific in regards to QO's being guaranteed, but I would assume that they are, otherwise what's the point?
2. As far as I can tell the following players did not have their team options for next season on their rookie scale contracts picked up:
Bulls - Cedric Simmons
Jazz - Morris Almond
Kings - Shelden Williams
Kings - Quincy Douby
Nets - Maurice Ager
Thunder - Saer Sene
Timberwolves - Rodeny Carney
Warriors - Marcus Williams
The only one that I could not find any specifc information about was Sene.

Since his contract last year ws non-guaranteed, his QO was also non-guaranteed. The point is 1) the team has to issue a QO in order to retain the ROFR on the player, and 2) from the player's POV, the QO is larger than a veteran minimum contract.

1) As you noted a summer contract doesn't count against the salary cap, but this really only affects teams who are at some time over the summer are under the cap.
2) If a team wishes to retain a "summer camp" player he has to be signed to a new contract for the regular season.
3) Summer contracts automatically end at the beginning of the regular season, but even so a summer camp player has to be waived.
4) The league only rebates a team after they have paid a player the $797,581. So Howard's prorated number would be based on his full minimum salary. He received $51,976 in salary from Denver.

Thanks, that makes sense

On point 4, I wasn't sure whether to use the full or rebated amount, thanks...
As far as the rest goes, I still am not quite sure I understand what qualifies as a "summer contract". Take for instance any random player invited to training camp, how about Chris Richard since we talked about him above. He signed his non-guaranteed QO on 9-29-08 for $886,517 and was then waived 10-27-08. Does any of his salary count towards the TWolves salary cap?

Re: Questions regarding "summer contracts"
The QO only has to be the same percentage of guarantee as the contract before it, which, in Richard's cas,e was 0%.
