Can you develop a tool to notify a poster?

Post#1 » by First Step » Wed Sep 18, 2013 9:48 pm

If i'm involved in a discussion in a NBA thread, and I'd like to hear the opinion of a particular poster I can notify them with an @username in the body of my post.

For example I write

I'd be interested to hear @tsherkin thoughts on this.

tsherkin would get a notification that I've mentioned him in a post.

He could click and go directly to that post and chime in if necessary.

Not sure how complex this is, but it's an interesting idea.

You could create a quote with the poster's name in it, that will create a notification already.

This is something suggested in the past. We would love to implement it once we can. It's on our to do list.

It doesn't e-mail you, but if I quote your post, your notifications should show it

I didn't get a notification that time.

And it wouldn't work if I hadn't previously posted in the thread. Unless you changed the user name of the person being quoted, but it would be easier with a function designed for that purpose.

It's cool to see innovation within forums. Before there were probably so many times when people were quoted and would never even realize it. Perhaps some good debates can be encouraged with these developments.

I suspect it only notifies you when someone clicks "Quote" on one of your posts.

Like Dream says, we hope to do it in the future but yes, the quote notifications work.

I think it could be a nice addition.

About 2-3 weeks ago I wanted to thank a poster for uploading a post game interview on Youtube, but I didn't know of anyway to get him to see my post. It was in the middle of a game thread, too, so those posts usually end up getting buried with a bunch of other posts.

If there was an @ tool like Twitter/Instagram, people in that situation could say, "Thank you @poster for this!" or "Thank you to @poster for the help on gathering information". Something like that.

That's a great sotuation to just quote his post. He'll get a notification and link to your post.

He did post in to a thread, right? Just quote the link.

No, he didn't post it in a thread.

I'm subscribed to his Youtube account and he uploaded a video on there.

I shared the video in a Game Thread and said "Thank you Gumby for this video!" even though I knew he wouldn't see it.

Then later on we had another thread where people were posting videos, then Gumby went and posted the video and said, "I wanted to post this before, but didn't because I didn't know it would be so big".

Then I responded with, "I actually posted it before and thanked you for uploading it, but you didn't see my post".

But yeah, I'm not saying an @ feature would be necessary. It's not important at all, but I do think it would be a neat feature. I think usually most posters wouldn't think of having to come up with a workaround like putting the poster's name in a quote to notify them, but if a 'tagging' feature was readily available I think a lot of people would use it, especially in team boards where other posters already have a sense of community and would like to initiate conversations/attention to their fellow posters.

With that said, I think it would be hard to tag/mention people in the first place because a lot of users have spaces in their usernames. So if someone were to @ me it would just hyperlink as 'Flash' instead of 'Flash Falcon X'.

Were going to see if we can do this in the next phase of upgrades.

It would be nice to have.
