I'm hoping enough people feel the same way so that a meaningful discussion will start that catches the eye of people like Howard Mass.

Having to wade through pages of bad jokes, irrelevant gifs, pictures, memes, YouTube videos, etc. because people are whoring for And 1s is making this site virtually unreadable, at least for topics that are controversial or for whatever reason will draw a lot of posters. IMO many of these post are borderline relevant and in many cases act to derail threads or at least discourage serious discussion. At times it seems as if people are more interested in saying or doing something "clever" than actually talking about the OP.

I suspect the site operators are very happy with the status quo, as it has probably increased hits per page since the system was implemented, but I think that any increase in traffic will be short term and eventually posters will migrate elsewhere. RealGM is not the only game in town.

Thoughts? I'd especially like to hear from Mods on this. they probably have a better sense of this issue (if it is one) than anyone.

You think people post those topics for And1's? is that what you are saying?

And1s are awesome for certain situations.

It is a shame that sometimes it just becomes who can make a witty comment to get And1s as opposed to making a meaningful post.

Add a Miss1/Minus1/Dislike-functionality and problem solved.

Who cares if people click on a small button that adds a digit? Is that what is wrong in the world?

I completely disagree. The forums are fine as they are. If a serious basketball conversation gets going, no one will bother to interfere with it through stupid jokes, and if they did, no one would bother to answer to those jokes. I think the balance is right.

I think and1s are great for a couple of reasons:

1) Saves on posts (instead of having to quote someone and do a + 1, just clicking one button solves the problem.

2) A simple way to give feedback to a poster you agree with.

3) A simple way to get feedback (in some case anonomously) to let you know when some people agree with you. We sure get enough of the opposite and it keeps you from being in a vacuum as far knowing whether your opinion is an opinion that others share or not share.

Sometimes you find certain posters are bullies and other posters might be afraid to agree with you publicly for fear of being lambasted by them. This gives them a way of showing their approval without getting beaten up by those who might disagree with that particular viewpoint.

4) Of course, I don't think it should be used for a popularity contest, but used in the proper context, I believe it adds some value to the forum. And yes, I do agree with the OP that (just like most things) it could be misused or abused.

The only other thing I would add, if you don't care for them, just ignore them and if you don't want to use them, then don't use them. They really don't mean all that much when you get right down to it. It's just another form of feedback (a relatively convenient one) for those who want to use it.

IMHO that could lead to fanbases wars and personal battles among posters.

My idea is to let the and 1's to be visible in any give post, but invisible in posters. No one other than yourself and mods would be able to see how many +1's you have collected. Perhaps that stops the whoring to a certain degree?

It's not that serious. If people actually make posts because they want more And1's on realgm their lives are pretty sad. I like it because I like to give feedback to a poster without having to quote them and tell them that they made good points in their post.

You get an And 1 for your modesty.

And 1s are basically positive reinforcement for posting interesting content, be that a detailed opinion, or yes, a dumb gif. If something is getting a lot of And 1s, that means it's what people here want to see. If these jokes are truly bad, they won't get And 1s and people will learn that their whoring attempts are getting them nowhere. If the stuff that is getting And 1'd is insipid to you, then yes, maybe you're on the wrong site.
