Kings' Arena Costs Keep Rising, Now $109M Over Proposal

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Sep 1, 2016 4:15 pm

The latest estimate of Golden 1 Center’s construction costs have increased to $556.6 million.

Costs have increased by $21.7 million in just one month.

The $556.6 million price represents a more than $79 million increase since the Kings broke ground in October 2014 on what was envisioned as a $477 million project.

The original estimate when proposed in 2013 was $447 million, bringing the total increase to $109 million.

With the city’s subsidy capped at $255 million, all the additional costs are coming from the Kings.

The Kings have maintained that the increases aren't cost overruns as much as the costs of design changes implemented since the initial proposal.

Well, as long as the city doesn't have to pay for it. Still, I don't think keeping the Kings in Sacramento was worth all this trouble, I really don't understand why they deserved to keep it there when much bigger markets are without a team. I know there are passionate Kings fans, but you can say that about all franchises.

They deserved to keep the team because it was theirs. Nearly all fanbases deserve to keep their teams, and Sacramento is a franchise with 30 years in that city now. You don't just steal teams from cities when they come together and pony up to keep them, just because they got stuck with a crap owner. NBA teams have grown so big they are civic institutions now.

In any case, the cost overruns are being picked up by the owners apparently, so hey, they can build as big a palace as they feel like paying for. I'm sure the NBA doesn't mind them getting more extravagant.

Poor ownership and management may have led this team to be as tumultuous as its been for the last decade, but the fans still support the team and are a fantastic fan base when the team has been successful. Keep in mind the arena is all about the business side which is still successful even through all the current team issues. The Kings arent going anywhere. Keep in mind the Maloufs tried to explore moving the team before selling it to Ranadive and the city petitioned and fought to ensure it wouldn't be allowed to. In fact it was one of the stipulations in the purchase, if I recall correctly.

Wow the balls on you  Seriously reread you statement and think how that comes across. It's not the fans fault the team suck. But no give the team to Vegas or Seattle. Let's relocate the Lakers while we're at it. :noway:
