Kings Leader For Monta Ellis After Bulls' Pursuit Falls Short

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Jul 9, 2013 8:36 pm

After an increasing belief the Chicago Bulls had been in position to acquire Monta Ellis, the Sacramento Kings have separated themselves as frontrunners to sign the free agent guard on a three-year contract, league sources told RealGM on Tuesday afternoon.

Ellis set up meetings with teams over the weekend and into the week, and he privately believed in recent days that joining the Bulls in a sign-and-trade between Chicago and the Milwaukee Bucks had been a growing possibility. Despite a hard push out of the Bulls, they ultimately couldn’t make the moves necessary to facilitate a potential sign and trade, a source said.

Behind the Kings, Ellis is also considering the Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks. Yet, all three organizations must complete roster moves to create salary room. The Kings and Mavericks need to move contracts, while the Hawks would have to sign and trade Jeff Teague.

The Kings have yet to broach discussion with John Salmons about using the amnesty clause on him, a league source told RealGM. Salmons has two seasons left on his contract, including a team option on the second year.

Ellis, 27, averaged 19.2 points and six assists last season, and he’s pitched himself as an All-Star caliber guard. The Denver Nuggets had emerged as a serious suitor for Ellis last week, but they were unwilling to commit financially.

Half Monta isn't a Bulls type player -- he is half a player since he cannot and has never played defense. He also has a very low basketball IQ, is a ball hog, and his true shooting percentage is way below league average. Oh, and he wants more than $12 million a year. Wow, perfect fit with Thibodeau!

who exactly were the bucks asking for in a trade to get ellis to chi? because if it had butler or noah involved then I understand why he is still looking at different teams. im not giving up the next best defender in the nba for scoring ability which is needed but chi can wait on toney snell or butler turns into a allstar kinda player which is reachable for him. and noah seem on the untouchable side also. bulls lose him they don't have a offensive rebounder and lose defense. plus all the bulls need is nate to resign

You raise a good point. It had to be someone whose salary matched with what Ellis was getting, no? There is no one on the Bulls I would trade. I agree that a year in Thibs system will really help Snell. That is the only way to get value; draft a solid college player from a good program, who has potential and the willingness to learn (offense and defense), and give him a few years to develop. Not overpay in free agency. A player like Butler is a prime example of this.

If he's asking for more than $11M in first year, they have to renounce or move him for less than $6M (his actual cap hold).

If the offer is for less than $11M in first year, they don't have to move Teague to make this deal. If Teague is move, there should be other things than just getting Ellis.

Still don't see why they would sign him at this price.

Same could be said of Belleni last year and Carlos Boozer in terms of defense

You are correct about Belinelli, but he signed at the end of free agency for $1.7 million on a one year contract, which was his value. Bulls needed a bench and he needed a roster spot. Boozer is more complicated. I didn't think they should sign him for $75 million in 2010, but they needed to sign a high profile FA after losing out in the LeBron sweepstakes, to keep the high value sheep hoofing through the turnstiles at UC. The Bulls had cleared a lot of cap space but the FA market was pretty slim then and he was considered the best available -- it should be a lesson to the teams that did not sign Howard.
