Paul George Will Earn $1.75M Less In Year 1 Of Extension If On All-NBA Team Due To Compromise

Paul George and the Indiana Pacers struck an interesting compromise on his contract extension, according to several sources.

If George makes an All-NBA team this season, his salary will settle at 27 percent of the cap level instead of the full 30 percent under the Derrick Rose rule. George's starting salary would then be at $15.8 million, approximately $1.75 million less than George could have earned had he fought for the full 30 percent.

The Pacers also reluctantly gave George an opt-out after Year 4.

Had to read this twice to understand what it was about. If I understand it well, if PG gets in the All NBA team in year 4 of his extension, he gets an opt-out?

Or does he get it if he makes it to the All NBA team during his contract?

And is the -1.75 an option? or is that a fixed agreement for allowing the potential opt-out?

from what I understand it looks as though he chose less money so that he could have an earlier opt-out. In essence he got an earlier opt-out than usual for a contract of similar length for 1.75 mil

...which is hilarious lol

respect the Pacers organization but they slipped on this one, unless they needed the cap space to save on the luxury.

Way to confuse everyone REALGM- thats why you dont use ESPN

George must make an All-NBA team (he already made 1 previously) or win the MVP this upcoming year to qualify for the "Derrick Rose Rule." The deal could be worth over $90 million, but George will have to meet a performance benchmark to get there. Otherwise, his contract will be worth the same as John Wall's new deal, which is about $80 million.

George is eligible to make over $90 million thanks to the so-called "Derrick Rose Rule," which is different than the Designated Player rule. The Designated Player rule states that a team can extend only one rookie contract for five years. That player can also become eligible for the Rose rule by meeting a certain requirement.

Normally for rookie scale maximum extensions, the first year of the new deal is based on 25 percent of the salary cap. But under the Rose rule, the first year can be up to 30 percent of the cap if at least one of the following benchmarks is reached:

Named to the All-NBA First, Second or Third team at least twice
Voted as a starter in the All-Star Game at least twice
Named the NBA Most Valuable Player at least once

It should also be noted that a player can be a team's Designated Player but also agree to not be eligible for the Rose rule. Russell Westbrook did this with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Not sure what the 'opt-out' implies... I dont think it regards the to 'Rose Rule', I think he negotiated it into his contract

If PG is selected on an All-NBA team this season he will be eligible for the Rose rule. The Rose rule says that his new max contract could be anywhere between 25% and 30% of the team's cap. The exact % is negotiated between the team and the player.

That's the result of the negotiation. PG and the Pacers agreed on 27% (if he meets the Rose rule) and PG also has the option to opt out in year 4.

We are very close to the luxury tax and the team has said several times that we're not going over it. This extra $1.75 will probably enable us to re-sign Lance Stephenson and keep our core intact for the next 4 years.

This isnt even news. Paul george started off this strong last season then fell off a cliff and finished the season with 40% shooting. Miserable for a player his size and 17 ppg.

He is a real all-star, people just don't want to believe it.....just like how Reggie Miller was always a second class citizen.

Reggie Miller scored over 2000 points in a season. PG hasnt topped 1300.

Actually, it is news. We didn't know the exact percentage that PG got. We knew that it was between 25% and 30% but we didn't know that it was 27%.

I have seen you make this statement again but this is simply WRONG.

Paul George had a miserable November last season. He was scoring 14.3 PPG on 39.2% shooting. He was horrible and those numbers dragged his averages down throughout the season.

In contrast, he is scoring 24.3 PPG on 47.4% shooting so far this season. That's a pretty big difference, don't you think?

You really need to get your facts straight.

Reggie Miller scores over 2000 points in one season. He scored 2016.

His next highest scoring season was 1855. You are the perfect example of proving misleading stats that appear to benefit your argument.

I can do the same.

Last season + this season (when PG actually had serious playing time and touches combined), Paul George PPG is 18.46.

Reggie's career is 18.2.

The year Reggie scored 2016 points, he averaged 24.58. PG this season is averaging 24.29.

Funny how you can make stats work for whatever argument you want.

Just to add - only 4 players scored more than 2000 points last season. A player doesn't need to score over 2000 points to be great..

He is the most talked about player with those in the know here in the UK. He is rapidly becoming as popular as for example KD is.

Besides, how is him working in a Footlocker going to do anything for this league? I'd rather have him play ball than sell shoes and jerseys.

thank you, because I was finding the whole thing bizarre before that explanation.
