Pelicans One Of NBA's Most Active Teams In Trade Talks Ahead Of Deadline

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sat Feb 8, 2014 7:41 pm

Ahead of the NBA trade deadline, few teams have been as active in talks as the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Pelicans are motivated to trade Eric Gordon, who is owed a combined $29 million over the next two seasons.

Not sure who is going to take Gordon off their hands but it's a very short list of teams. Even the Nets and Knicks, 2 teams that would take on a contract like that are both knee deep in SG's.

They can be as active as they want trying to trade Gordon, not happening.

If you pair up Gordon with Ryan Anderson for STAT and JR, hell yeah the Jim Dolan will go for it!

Probably one of the best things for the Suns was that the Hornets/Pelicans matched the offer sheet.

Regarding Gordon, the teams that seem willing to take on crap contracts to get better are:

Nets
Kings
Knicks

A Nets deal seems implausible given they've few pieces to make a deal and already have the Thing That Should Not Be (i.e., Johnson's contract) at the 2 spot.

The Kings could send Marcus Thornton and Travis Outlaw to the Pelicans for Gordon. Neither Thornton or Outlaw's deals are great but they are one year shorter than Gordon's and get paid $3m less per year in aggregate.

The only Knicks deal that could possibly make sense would be Bargnani and Shumpert for Gordon. But I'm not sure that deal really improves the Knicks overall.

If Jim Dolan has a magic wand, he will turn Bargs and JR into Luol Deng as well as Felton into Linsanity. Alas, that wand does not exists.

GS - Sends Lee and Barnes
NOLA - Sends Gordon and Jason Smith

One horrible contract swapped for another... Gordon comes off the bench for the Warriors and is instantly the best 6th man in the league. Smith steps in at PF and there really won't be a huge drop off for the Ws.

NOLA gets a legit "All-star" to pair with Davis and a rising star to put at 3.

Whatchu think?

If he was, they would have gotten it. They're going to have to eat that contract one way or the other. Same reason we still have Boozer. They're only going to get overpaid bench guys for him. Look at Toronto. Gay for bench players. Charlie V and Stuckey is a real good haul for Eric Gordon, considering. Take it and run.
