Stan Van Gundy, Pistons Agree On $35M, Five-Year Deal

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed May 14, 2014 2:06 am

The Detroit Pistons and Stan Van Gundy have reached agreement in principle on a five-year, $35 million for him to become their head coach and president of basketball operations.

Van Gundy has been out of the NBA over the past two seasons after being fired by the Orlando Magic.

Great coach for this team. Hopefully he can get them back on track. They have the talent, but lack the chemistry and spacing to be effective. Great signing imo.

Great move for Detroit. I like to see the Central division (and Eastern Conference) getting stronger. Step your game up Milwaukee and Cleveland

Would have thought SVG was holding out for a "good" job, not a rebuild.

But if anyone can fix this mess in Detroit it is probably him.

Not sure about SVG as a player personnel guy. However, the "Master of Panic" is a very good coach.

First order of business, get rid of Josh Smith and use the money to resign Monroe.

Josh Smith to the Lakers?

It's funny that someone so outspoken against tanking is now going to control a team that tanked in order to keep their top 10 pick this year.

The Van Gundy's aren't exactly brilliant basketball minds. Better than a lot of coaches, but nowhere near elite status. Seems as if Pistons management just wanted to fill multiple jobs on the cheap. Won't be seeing a repeat of 2004 anytime soon.

They could have interviewed Mark Jackson, George Karl, and Lionel Hollins, ALL much better coaches than SVG.

I'll be fine with this as long as it doesn't include Otis Smith.

No idea what you're talking about, SVG has consistently had above .500 seasons his entire career and has made the Eastern Conference finals multiple times and the Finals once, while almost none of those other coaches have done much. Mark Jackson's fundamentals on offense were just terrible, post ups and isos all day, he's unproven. George Karl has nearly always been a first round exit in the playoffs. Lionel Hollins hasn't done much either. SVG is probably the closest coach among these four who have been close to having a ring.

uhh....they have. You should research how players that played under SVG felt about playing under SVG.

Also, George Karl - COY; Lionel Hollins took a team with mediocre talent and made them play better than what they were; Mark Jackson, well, mixed reviews but most basketball heads would tell you that he's an excellent, if not, underrated coach.

Mark Jackson MAY be the only one you have a point with. Maybe.

George Karl is consistently a great coach, and has (rightfully) won COY.
Lionel Hollins took a mediocre team and had them playing better than they should be (I advise you look at those Grizz teams closely).

Not to mention, SVG was fired, Pat Riley took over, do you remember how that story ended?

George Karl is a good regular season coach, but going into the playoffs, he's always been a first round exit and gets out coached. Last season he was a third seed with the Nuggets and was expected to beat the Dubs across the board in the playoffs, but the Dubs still beat them. So, in a way he underperformed from what we should have seen in the playoffs. Lionel Hollins, I can't really say much for since I didn't watch much of him, but I just know whatever was going on in Memphis, he wasn't working there.

Kind of a desperate, aggressive move but I think it was needed especially with the position Detroit is at currently. They are basically smack in the middle: not terrible and not quite good yet. SVG will turn Drummond into more of a beast, but it will be interesting to see what will happen w/ Smith and Jennings. Would either one or both get traded?

As a Lakers fan, only way I would like this move is if there would be some kind of 1st round pick involved and the pick is non-protected but then again Smith would take up a lot of the cap space the Lakers are trying to preserve for 2015, 2016 and beyond.

Get money, get paid. Dats wussup in Detroit!

Smith or Monroe will be gone soon, I guess Smith as a buddy of Howard won't be too happy about SVG.
