NBA Considering Moving Back Draft, Adding Awards Show

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sat Jun 28, 2014 1:01 am

The NBA is "very interested" in moving the draft after July 1 and packaging it with a season-ending awards show, possibly on consecutive nights.

The league would like to create more space between the end of the Finals and the draft in order to better promote the draft.

Moving the draft back will be difficult because it impacts free agency and the collective bargaining agreement. Also, the league needs to negotiate a change in the draft date with its TV partners.

The NBA season is already turning into a long year with the draft, free agency and summer league taking place shortly after the Finals.

The NHL has a season-ending awards show before its draft.

I like the idea of an awards show, but damn, the draft feels long enough to get to as it is.

Probably a good move though.

Why is he trying to copy the NHL? What are the awards for? I'm guessing the announcement of the MVP and all that, I don't really like it.

The awards show is going to be tacky. Probably hosted by Kevin Hart every year.

Please god no.

I REAAAAALLLY hate his act at the all star game. Why do people find him so funny? He's just a smaller, less funny Martin Lawrence ripoff.

The NFL has one too, usually the day before the Super Bowl.

I know a lot of people aren't liking the idea but I think it could turn out pretty cool. I would like to see the playoffs play at least some sort of role in determining a seasons MVP, plus it would be cool to see all the suspense unfold as the winner is announced live. :D

I hate those award shows, ESPY's, NHL awards...they all suck. NBA pats itself on the back enough during the all star weekend and the Finals. I like how they have the draft before free agency and summer league. NFL tried messing around pushing the draft back and now the rookies are all behind the 8 ball. Bad idea.

Please no - my favorite thing about the NBA draft is that they hold it so quickly after the season. The wait time for the NFL draft is preposterous, don't go down that road.

The only reason I see Silver doing the awards show is sponsorship money. The guy is a businessman. Plus we all get to see funky Westbrook and Wade outfits every year I guess

I think the awards show is a great idea. The way we hear NBA award news now is so sloppy and source-driven. "Sources: Player X will be named Rookie of the Year" always gets release 3 days before the official announcement. It's stupid.

This is exactly why I hate this idea. The NFL draft drags on way too long after the Super Bowl and its annoying. Have an awards show, fine but don't mess with the draft.

I would love the draft to be a week after the free agency signing period starts.

You'd be able to get a clearer picture of how you want to draft, if your able to sign a free agent first.

Also, I think the draft should be expanded by a couple rounds, if anything it helps your summer league team, and it's always an asset to have more picks.

There is always some guys that go undrafted, which end up being pretty good. Also, you can stockpile international talent.

They present the actual awards like MVP, ROY, COY, DPOY, etc.

Which is what the NBA would be doing as well.
