Lawson's Agent: Nuggets Actually Care, Rare For Team To Put Players' Well-Being First

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Jul 22, 2015 12:12 am

Josh Kroenke detailed the final months of the Ty Lawson's tenure with the Denver Nuggets in an interview with Marc J. Spears.

Kroenke said he had repeated conversations with Lawson about his “life struggles,” adding that Lawson often said he would attempt to fix his issues but he could “never fully shake them.”

“He always had an affinity for burning the candle at both ends,” Kroenke said. “We want to give our players freedom to be young guys as well. We’re not going to be drill sergeants. But we want our guys to be able to handle their personal lives on their own.

“Ty … there were times when he was better than others. But the problems have been there for several years, going back to when we were having a lot of on-court success. I don’t want to go back too far. There were just a lot of times where you were at practice and you just know. You could smell it. You know there is probably deeper issues than he would probably let on.”

Lawson returned from the All-Star break late after spending time in Las Vegas and Kroenke hasn't spoken with him much since.

“I love Ty and will always love Ty, but once I saw him going down this dark path, we knew that we probably were going to end up in a situation where we were dumping him,” Kroenke said. “It creates a weird dynamic.”

Lawson now gets to join the Houston Rockets in a great situation.

“[The Nuggets] understood what was best for Ty,” Lawson’s agent Happy Walters told Yahoo Sports via text. “They actually care, and it’s rare for owners and GMs to put players’ well-being first.”

They care about their players' well-being by trading a repeat drunk driver to a city where it is more likely he will be a drunk driver

And they obviously don't care about their team and their fans for taking pennies on the dollar in that trade, and then instead of trading Chandler, Gallinari, Nelson and Faried away for draft picks to tank and rebuild, they decided to sign them all to bloated contracts so they can toil in mediocrity and treadmill for eternity

Okay then.

If he was coming to practice drunk, that is horrible. Could need more than a months worth of rehab to fix that...

you can put a spin on it either way...

they traded him to a CONTENDER where maybe the success the rockets will have, the better leadership and structure of the organization will lead him to have better focus on and off the court.

and the nuggets don't care about their fans because they weren't willing to tank for MAYBE a chance at championship contender in 4-5 seasons? Then why are the sixers getting flamed all over these boards for treating their fans so poorly during their tanking? If anything by resigning the fan favourites, putting out a decently competitive team, possibly vying for a playoff spot with the emergence of mudiay and possible free agent signings in the next few seasons and a new coach, will be a better service for their fans rather than having 15-20 wins for the next 3 years

More likely to be a drunk driver? What's your reasoning? They have more DUI's as a city, so naturally he will be more inclined to drink and drive? There's more/better clubs, so he'll be more likely to drink and drive? He's teammates with Dwight? What are you talking about?

Wow the worst post I've read in a long time. I'd love to hear you say that to Kroenke's face. Taking an act of genuine friendship and concern for a player that took The Nuggets deep into the playoffs and spinning it as if Kroenke is just trying to make excuses for bad gm'ing.

Galinnari on a 2 year deal that 70% of the league would have given him in a heartbeat. Jameer Nelson on a short deal to help Mudiay along until he's ready. Chandler was overpaid but he's the best defender on the team and there might not be a more moveable player in the league than Kenneth Faried if they do decide to take your advice and blow it up.

There are people's lives at stake here this isn't just a game of 2K. Go back to whatever hole you crawled out of and reevaluate why you follow this sport.

More DUIs per capita in Houston
bigger city and more clubs so more likelihood to drink and drive
City with a lack of good public transport so more likely to drink and drive
More star players and more winning so more likely to have parties involving alcohol

This team as constructed will never make the playoffs even if Mudiay becomes a star

If Faried was very movable he would be gone already he's been on the trade block for 2 years and no one has bit yet

In this business you do what's right for the team and you don't get caught up in the feelings. Look at almost any interview with execs they all say that and it's true.

He has a personal problem. He's already proven the environment he is in is irrelevant. The reasons you cited will not exacerbate a problem that is essentially as bad is it can be. He's a multiple-DUI offender, and who knows how many times he's gotten away with it. If you don't think he's already had access to primo bars clubs women etc all of the vices a pseudo-star athlete can have, you're sadly mistaken. Given that his deal was recently restructured such that his contract next season is non-guaranteed, he's entering court-ordered rehab, and if he screws up again there's little to no doubt he will go to jail, it seems like he's looking to turn over a new leaf. I think this new destination will be good for him, especially since the Rockets are a legitimate contender that will give him something to wholly focus on (championship aspirations that were nonexistent in Denver).

And? You act like tanking is the surefire way to build a championship contender, and that it greatly benefits the fans. Some sixers fans might be okay with it but many aren't. There was just news released that the sixers viewership ratings are considered a joke. What I'm saying is that resigning their players and attempting to make the playoffs at some point over the next 3-5 years isnt the nuggets not caring about their fans....

And this LOL:

nba2k16 wrote:This team as constructed will never make the playoffs even if Mudiay becomes a star

Such hyperbole really shows your intelligence. The nuggets will most certainly be in the 10-13 spot in the West next season. After that? If mudiay becomes legit star, they still won't make the playoffs? Even if they make a great trade? Trade some of their assets for disgruntled star? Say like demarcus cousins, who would probably like to play for his old coach malone? Or even if they manage to draft another few good players? Or with the cap going up they manage to sign some star player? Anything could really happen and you saying "never" is ridiculous

I would have to disagree with your second point. There's a lot of teams that would LOVE to get a player like Faried, but I believe the Nuggets were asking for too much, same goes with Chandler and Gallinari. There are only two teams that I believe that can give them what the want; I believe the Pistons and the Pacers, and MAYBE the Hornets, but that's if they are willing to add a little bit more money to their salary.

It is not a surefire way but do you seriously expect to contend with Mudiay, Nurkic, Gallinari, Chandler and Faried as your core? Even if all those guys have the best season of their life they are not getting in the top 6 of the west of LAC, OKC, SAS, HOU, GSW, MEM let alone past Pelicans, Suns, Jazz, etc.

And if you have a good season, you can't draft a franchise altering player without a top pick? Can you draft a good player late in the draft? Certainly. I am not denying that. But not enough to get this team anywhere close to contention.

If your goal is to just be ok, sure this strategy is great. But the goal should be to win a chip and this is not the way to do it. Tanking provides a better chance to draft potential stars around Mudiay and Nurkic.

Fair enough, but there comes a point where you have to take less than market value for those players to get the tank started to star getting to the team to the bottom to draft stars. Keeping them longer prolongs the treadmill

noo i completely agree with you... they will be a treadmill team, i said they might be able to make the playoffs, not contend. Tanking for a few seasons definitely gives you a better chance of landing a star than the limited options that come with treadmilling.

BUT the argument was, when you originally said the nuggets dont care about their fans because they arent willing to tank. I was just saying that tanking seems like a slap in the face to the fans. People want to pay money to come and see a semi competitive team. Not tanking for 3-5 seasons for a CHANCE for a high draft pick who MAY end up being a star in 2-3 years after that...

That's short term thinking

In the LONG RUN it is better for the fans to tank and get a star and compete for a chip in the future one day

But you can't tank with good players. The thing is that the Nuggets are a good team, they just don't know if they want to win games or build in the draft.

Fair enough, but there comes a point where you have to take less than market value for those players to get the tank started to star getting to the team to the bottom to draft stars. Keeping them longer prolongs the treadmill

But you can't tank with good players. The thing is that the Nuggets are a good team, they just don't know if they want to win games or build in the draft.

The Nuggets are NOT a good team.
