Tim Duncan Waived By Spurs

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Jul 12, 2016 4:56 pm

The San Antonio Spurs waived Tim Duncan upon the announcement of his retirement.

Before the start of free agency, Duncan exercised his player option with the Spurs for $5.6 million. Duncan had not yet decided at that point whether he was going to retire.

The Spurs needed to clear Duncan's salary to create cap space for their free agent moves.

Because he opted in to that vet minimum contract a few weeks ago, he had to be waived in order to officially retire, get paid the $5.6 mil (or whatever it is) and still allow the Spurs to have the extra roster spot while not taking a cap hit. In other words, he's getting paid to retire which, given how many pay cuts he's taken in the last few seasons, is a reasonable price to pay for the legend.
