Knicks Discuss Acquiring First Round Pick From Blazers

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Jun 1, 2017 5:15 pm

The New York Knicks have discussed acquiring one of the three first round picks owned by the Portland Trail Blazers.

Portland owns the 15th, 20th and 26th overall picks. The Blazers have interest in using one of those picks to shed salary from their books.

Talks between New York and Portland are believed to be in the early stages, but one scenario discussed involved an additional player from Portland being sent in a trade.

The Knicks own the eighth overall pick.

What is the $$$ value of the 15th overall pick?

Turner and the 15th pick for Lance Thomas would save the Blazers a little over $10 million per year over the next 3 years. Not including luxury tax benefits it's basically $30 million for the 15th pick and whatever downgrade (if any) from Turner to Lance Thomas.

Turner would seem to potentially be a fit in the Triangle with his ability to pass and handle the ball. Thomas is a high IQ, good locker room guy that can defend and hit some outside shots.

If they have a chance to add a few weapons and fly up a few seeds I think they'd do it. Blazers have plenty of rotation players what are get gonna do With all those picks of theirs draft some foreign human and stash some?

The most you can throw in in a trade is 3 mil, so previously it was 3 mil. People just don't sell first round picks anymore though, so it's probably somewhere between 5 and 10 million.

Exactly. Taking on salary for the chance to add young talent is the way to go. You're not anywhere close to contending any way, so they should just stockpile.

Defeats the purpose of the trade, plus Melo doesn't make them that much better. Still at best a first round exit. So they'd pay more luxury tax to be in the same position???

sure. there's only so much you can take on. but i think portland presents an intriguing opportunity of useful expensive players who can help shape the culture for the youngsters.

i can imagine evan turner's contract is one they want to move urgently. meanwhile, i see evan turner as a good culture guy and trainer in the meantime. if he comes with a pick in this stacked draft, might be worth the move.

many fans would not be cool with the idea of resigning to not signing big-name FAs in the near future. but the knicks need to develop their own and retain them. play some winning ball and create that team identity that will retain KP, willy, and maybe a cluster of young studs selected over the next couple of years.
