GM: We're Coming Out Of A Cap Bubble

The decision by the NBPA to reject cap smoothing created a spike in 2016 that the free agency class that offseason benefited from tremendously to the detriment of subsequent classes.
Teams in the 2017 offseason had less cap space due to the types of multi-year contracts that were agreed upon in 2016 as well as fewer playoff games.
Many front offices recklessly signed players assuming the cap would continue to climb at its projected rate.
The cap spiked from $70 million in 15-16 to $94 million in 16-17.
"If you're a team, you're sitting there saying, 'Well, I'm not going to negotiate off of someone else's mistake,' " a general manager from a team not linked to any of the players signed by the Grizzlies in 2016 told ESPN. "That was the problem. Players were going to try to hold teams and agents to these comparisons. We're coming out of a bubble.
"You had faulty logic all across the league. The league and the players association for a lack of smoothing, the teams that spent, the agents and players that thought that this was a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that was never going to end. You had a lot of parties that were guilty of a gold-rush mentality. It's always going to come to an end."

Teams like the Wizards, Knicks, Magic screwed themselves as a result with inflated contracts awarded to non-starting big men who can't provide value in new NBA (Mahimi/Biyombo/Noah) with $16-18 million/year contracts over multiple years.

Noah was a horrible signing. Can thank PJ for that- Biyombo had a great year after making peanuts and got paid huge as expecred but he is most effective with a good offensive ended core around him. ORL will have a hard time trying to move him. They had a log jam at C and still went after him.

Chris Paul should fired for letting this happen as it was stupid AF. Pure greed and Adam silver told this would happen. On top of that they let weak mind KD join the Warriors bc of this and still get paid. IGNORANT FOOLS

Very suspicious that the phrasing McMahon uses is: the GM [being quoted is one who] is from a team not linked to any of the players signed by Memphis in 2016. I know he's trying to provide cover for Donnie, but we all know where McMahon got that quote.
Furthermore, we know exactly why Donnie is giving that quote: Nerlens Noel.

If it wasn't for that bonanza of gold capital the Dubs wouldn't have had a shot to even consider Durant without dropping one of the original members of the big three. If the Warriors win 3-4 in a row will it be a detriment to the game of basketball because this occurred the one year Kevin Durant was to be available via free agency. He proved he can in on the big stage but had to jump on the back of the proven champions who beat him the year before being up 3-1 to get them over the mountain top again. I personally think Durant is a joke but he's laughing all the way to the bank. Funny thing is if he did this with the Celtics I would give him tremendous respect. The NBA should just have no cap at this point if only 2-4 teams have legitimate shot at a title
The NFL/NHL has parity which I believe expands the game for the fans. Hopefully the NBA culture doesn't get ruined by the incoming Dubs domination. Players and Teams change year over year so nothing is guaranteed. Injuries is the only possible outcome I could see bringing the Dubs from not winning 2-3 more championships.

If the NBPA had agreed to cap smoothing for last season, the Warriors still would have been able to acquire Durant as a free agent. But it would have required trading Iguodala and probably trading/waiving Livingston in addition to trading Bogut and renouncing Barnes and Ezeli. Much of their quality bench strength would have disappeared.

Donnie some random GM is referring to Bismack Biyombo's deal, which
Noel some random FA C is using as a basis for his negotiation.

Bismack is a backup center that hoodwinked Rob Hennigan after 1 playoff series to pay him like a strong, 2-way center. He shouldnt play more than 20 mpg. Just another reason why Hennigan was let go.
