Cardinals End Season Atop OPSERA Rankings

Post#1 » by RealGM Articles » Fri Oct 9, 2015 2:40 pm

The OPSERA is a statistic RealGM Executive Editor Chris Reina created in order to objectively rank teams by how well they hit (OPS) and pitch (ERA).

In order to determine the OPSERA rating for each, we take their OPS, multiply that number by 10 to move the decimal point over one place to the right and then subtract their ERA from that number.

All Statistics are through the end of the 2015 regular season.

1. (1) St. Louis – 4.22
They dominated the standings throughout the season -- will that lead to another ring?

2. (11) Toronto – 4.17
The hottest team since the All-Star break appears to be the team to beat in the American League.

3. (4) Pittsburgh – 3.98
The Pirates entered the playoffs as baseball\'s best team, but then Jake Arrieta happened.

T4. (3) Los Angeles Dodgers – 3.95
The Dodgers earned a third straight National League West Title, but can they advance past the NLCS? Will Clayton Kershaw fix his reputation? Will they choke again?

-- (5) Houston – 3.95
The Astros nearly blew a great fast half, but they made the playoffs as a Wild Card and anything can happen.

6. (10) Chicago Cubs – 3.83
The Cubs had the third-best record in the NL, but needed to beat the Pirates just to get into a full-fledged postseason series.

7. (7) New York Mets – 3.69
After getting swept by the Phillies, the Mets limped into the playoffs. The only way the Mets advance to the NLCS is through the Dodgers bullpen with Kershaw and Greinke lurking.

8. (11) Washington – 3.62
Changes are coming for the Nationals, who have already canned manager Matt Williams.

9. (6) Kansas City – 3.61
The Royals dominated and then cooled but have led by eight or more games since July.

10. (8) San Francisco – 3.60
The defending champions are taking a year off between playoff appearances again. Three rings in five years isn\'t bad, but the Giants have a lot of questions going into the offseason.

11. (12) Cleveland – 3.58
If the Cubs win the World Series, the Indians will have the longest drought at 66 years.

12. (16) Tampa Bay – 3.46
The Dodgers average home attendance is three times that of Rays.

13. (9) New York Yankees – 3.39
The Yankees limped back into the playoffs, but the stay lasted only nine innings against the surging Astros.

14. (15) Seattle – 3.36
The Mariners spent money again ... and failed to live up to expectations. A new front office regime will look to change things.

15. (18) Los Angeles Angels – 3.27
The Angels struggled, had a huge September to make the playoffs a reality, but came up short in the end.

16. (13) Baltimore – 3.23
Baltimore has a number of important players headed for free agency. The 2016 roster figures to look quite different.

17. (19) Texas – 3.15
The Rangers are a great example of why the baseball season is very long.

18. (24) Boston – 3.09
In the month after Hanley Ramierz\'s season ended, the Red Sox went 18-11. Hats off to Xavier Bogaerts.

T19. (17) Arizona – 2.97
If the Diamondbacks find any pitching this off-season, look out.

-- (23) Minnesota – 2.97
The Twins made a surprising run, but it won\'t mean much if they don\'t build on 2015 next season.

21. (21) Detroit-  2.94
The Tigers began the season as one of the favorites to win the World Series and battled with the Royals for two months before bowing out and trading stars.

22. (14) Oakland – 2.93
First to worst for the A\'s. Billy Beane gambled with offseason trades and lost, but did get a promotion. Highlights include switch-pitching Pat Venditte and female coach Justine Siegal.

23. (26) Miami – 2.92
Dee Gordon wins the batting title. That\'s about it for the 2015 Marlins.

24. (22) Chicago White Sox – 2.88
Chris Sale\'s 274 strikeouts breaks a 107-year White Sox record.

25. (25) San Diego – 2.76
The Padres spend a lot and started hot, and then won the west, not.

26. (20) Cincinnati – 2.73
The Reds ended a disappointing season by losing nine of their last 10 games.

27. (27) Milwaukee – 2.72
Will they entertain trading Ryan Braun and/or other stars?

28. (28) Colorado – 2.44
Nolan Arenado is a treat. As always, the Rockies just need some pitching.

29. (29) Atlanta – 2.31
The Braves were the second team to win five straight games without scoring more than two runs a game in history. At least they have a new stadium in their future.

30. (30) Philadelphia – 2.15
No. 1 pick in 2016.
