With Klay, would any other team be willingly to pay that much....unlikely, not when specialized shooters are not rare, but there are several around who specialize in facilitating and being a capable scorer. Is 17.5 million worth what he does, not really. They are paying a super high premium to keep that development in back court together, also cause they want to win now. 2-5 extra million in Klay's pocket isn't a big sacrifice, considering, that they have him 100% committed to a potential Western Finals run during his contract. I don't think he is worth it at all, but to the Warriors, in this season it makes tons of sense (but that was with Mark Jackson's offense), and is totally worth it. 14 attempts a night for 18 points is OK, that will win games, just not Western Finals. If only he could facilitate, cause Lee is the better option for scoring, and Curry is the better option for shooting.
People thought Hayward was getting over paid, but there are teams who would pay just as much like Hornets! For being the leader of the team, who is in elite group of players who got 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal, with at least 15 points a game last year (like lebron facilitator status), he has sort of proven he is worth that kind of money, cause he is becoming a scorer on top, and that will mean he becomes a top 20 player material. So what he does is definitely worth the extra dough especially when potential all-stars aren't in full stock, especially not for small markets not going to playoffs! Jazz did pay a premium, because they also want to keep his development going and 100% committed to this team. But they have no other all-star. Warriors already have 2 all-star players, they could have easily found someone like Alec Burks to do what Klay does, but at 10.5 million.

This is the best team GS has had in years, so it makes sense why they caved, esp with the pending cap increase.
But still, this does seem really premature. $17M for a guy who hasn't done anything yet? Sure he can hit 3's, and he played really good defense for a few possessions against the Clippers last post season. Am I missing anything here?

no more premature than chandler parsons & Gordon Hayward getting the max, when you look at the market and impending salary cap increases it makes perfect sense

Don't really agree, Klay is probably the best young two-way SG in the league

Just because the cap is going up does not necessarily make all these max deal signings no-brainers. Even in Klay's situation, that's a ton of money for a role player. Everyone wants to say he's a great two-way player, but is he really elite? Like, $17m per year elite?
Also, I agree the cap will go up... However nobody knows how much it will increase. It could be anywhere from 10% to 50%. Judging that the owners have all the leverage during negotiations, it will be a fairly marginal increase... So all these big signings might just be even worse in hindsight.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Our "defensive guard" just set the NBA record for 37 points in one quarter.
We gave you a clue when we wouldn't trade him for KLove.

I'm sorry.
Klay shuts down the better smalls in crunch time and isn't 25 yet.
Take a look at Klay's points per game on the top left of this ESPN link. I'm saying 18 points per game is in the rear view mirror and the kid hasn't peaked yet, probably won't for 2-3 years.
Still, owning an NBA record at 24 years old is a decent start for any NBA player.
Re: Salary: ...Klay's salary this year is $3 million, next year $15.
We have him signed for 5 years and are not complaining.
Get used to seeing his name in NBA highlights on a frequent and routine basis.
You might keep an eye on the rest of GSW: FO, staff and player's roster.
The owner goes first class from the top down and just might create the NBA's next dynasty.
