Maybe max dollars but not max length. Possibly 3 years at max$ with a team option after 2.

Yep, that seems the most likely scenario to me.

He is a former MVP. Yes, he will get a "max" contract. There are super-max contracts and regular max contracts. I think he will get the latter, definitely no less than that unless he suffers yet another career threatening, season-derailing injury before then.

If Harrison Barnes (10 PPG, 5 REB) and Tristan Thompson (8 PPG, 8 REB) want close to the max... Then you better believe Derrick is getting the max. He's returning to MVP form this year - book it! Only a handful of players have the ability to change the complexion of a game the way Drose can. PLUS. You people need to remember the NBA is a business. Even with his injuries, Drose adds so much value to the franchise. He sold the 5th most jerseys in the NBA last year.

max deals are tied to percentages of the salary cap rather than hard dollar values, and the various-sized max salaries are a product of time spent in the league. in 2017, rose will have been in the league for 9 years and so will be eligible for 30% of the cap (projected to be 108M, so rose's salary would be roughly 32.4M/year). if rose signs for less than that, he's not signing a max deal.

So far, D. Rose has out played Russel Westbrook (twice), Chris Paul (among others) and totally destroyed Mike Conley Jr.

* I believe all of those guys are receiving max contracts, right?

So, the market will dictate D. Rose's next contract, not the media.

D. Rose is looking like he will explode before the start of the playoffs - and next season (with Hoiberg not wearing him out) he should be able to play at a high level for an entire season.
