Atlanta United signs first player, begins to build roster

Image

Atlanta United today announced a key milestone in club history with the signing of its first player, 23-year-old goalkeeper Alexander Tambakis.

The 6’ 2” goalkeeper comes to Atlanta from Panathinaikos, one of the top clubs in the Greek Superleague. He will play the 2016 season on loan with Charleston Battery, Atlanta United’s newly announced USL affiliate, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. Terms of the deal were not disclosed per MLS and club policy.

“This is an exciting day for our club as we officially begin building our roster,” said Atlanta United president Darren Eales. “Every spot on the roster is important as we seek to find a competitive edge. Our approach will be to find quality players that contribute to the squad at every level.”

Atlanta United recently announced a USL affiliation with Charleston Battery, allowing Atlanta United’s 2016 signings to have the option of playing on loan with the Battery ahead of the club’s inaugural 2017 season. Eales and Atlanta United technical director Carlos Bocanegra believe that thoughtful planning and depth of roster are the critical building blocks to creating a strong club from the ground up.

“Alex is a promising young player with solid tools and a big upside,” said Bocanegra. “He’s already had big game experience in Greece which is an advantage for a 23-year-old goalkeeper. We’re looking forward to his continued development at the Battery.”

Tambakis signed a professional contract with Panathinaikos in 2010 and was promoted to the first team squad in 2011. While there and on loan at Niki Volos he gained valuable international playing experience in a top European division.

Hopefully it does, because it's always good to support local.

Always a good idea to watch this season for potential signings that Atlanta can make.

I hope we sign Freddy Adu. Not sure of the fix since I don't know our style of play but if he produced for Tampa, he might be a player to target.

Some signings have been made, the team is coming together, and the city is buzzing. Over 29K season ticket deposits have already been made.

I currently live near Cincinnati and have seen first hand how much the local community has gotten behind the FC here.

I'd love to see Atlanta display that kind of support for the newest sports franchise in my old hometown.

ATL gets a bad (well deserved?) rap for having underwhelming, fair-weather fans. This is the chance to support a growing franchise in a booming sport from Day One. And maybe remove that stigma that's dogged us for decades.

United we Stand, baby!!!

That would be awesome, wonder where they are going to play the first games since the stadium is so far behind on the regular parts and they haven't even started on the roof that no one has ever tried to build before? Is Bobby Dodd big enough for a MLS pitch?

I mean they've already sold 22k season tickets that REALLY limits where you can play right?

These jerseys are glorious!!!

It will, however, take some time to get used to advertisements across the front...

You get used to it. The ads are soccer's way of compensating for the fact that there's 45+ minutes of continuous game play in each half.

Jersey is basically AC Milan with half the amount of stripes

I wonder if the MLS is expanding too fast
for its own good

Why do you think that?

I think expansion has been quick, but it also hasn't hurt the league. If they raise the salary cap to keep up with expansion MLS will be fine.
