What held this team back, that got them to the point they are now?

We blew up the living hell out of it. We're doing some crazy hardcore rebuilding. We were going to be stuck as a perennial fringe playoff team, which basically means absolutely nothing. Not good enough to make a big difference in the league, not bad enough to improve through the draft. So we traded pieces for draft picks and expiring deals and started rebuilding.

RealGM, where trading the worst contract in the league for a #2 pick happens.

A combination of strategic and succession management.

Treadmill bitches.

Bob Segar also helps.

was there a reason for trading away their best players?

was it some kind of image cleaner type move or something like the Wizards did over the decade?

because we sucked, were near the luxury tax, and our best players were around 30 years old. nothing to do with image at all.

The team was capped out and stuck in perennial 9-7 seed Hell. Management (Cho) decided they didn't want to to that, so they got rid of all older, longer contract players and started a rebuild.

It's actually remarkable they were able to do it in one season.

I think most of us are actually pretty happy they took this direction. We've seen other organizations fumble around the late lottery for YEARS and that has to be brutal for their fans (see Golden State)

Two steps back to take 3 steps forward. We got rid of our worst contracts (like Okafor) and have acquired a few draft picks in the process. On top of that we're now absolutely terrible which means a few top 5 draft picks instead of #9's, #11's, etc.

It's a 3 year process I believe where we will begin to be a playoff team around year 3-4 if played right by drafting well and not committing ourselves to bad contracts (like Tyrus Thomas) or trades (like Tyrus Thomas for our future first).

Houston's had the 14th pick in each of the last three drafts. That's the definition of going nowhere. We avoided that, and then got draft pick wound up with some nice pieces like Biyombo and we're rebuilding.

you can have jrich. the trade for jrich was the beginning of the end for bobcats 1.0. killed our slow build through draft (even though we sucked at drafting) and killed our capspace that bernie had been hoarding for 3 years. should have stayed at 8 and taken noah, like everyone was predicting we would do.
