Re: OT: What Are You Listening to Now?
agreed that McCartney is a genius. He has an incredible ability to create beautiful melodies and catchy hooks that just sit in your brain. Lennon, this, Lennon that... whatever, if you ask me McCartney was always the MVP of the Beatles. I love the Wings probably just as much as the great classic late Beatles albums - Revolver, Magical Mystery Tour, Sgt Peppers, White Album, Abbey Rd and Let it Be.
I think we ranked favorite Beatles songs a while ago, didn't we. HAHA, typical Fats.

now I'm listening to this, you can just get lost listening to all the music he's done.
on the podcast I heard him on, he said how the beatles formula was to totally scrap a style as soon as they found success with it.
say "well that worked" now lets try something else.
That's what I admire most, the music really is quite diverse and is probably what allowed him to keep the music fresh

I feel a similar way. What I found awesome, and I hope you'll understand me as I'm not musically educated, is the range of his voice. The way he can start off tracks like "Let It Be" or "Golden Slumbers" (my all-time favorite "god, I wish it was longer" track, even if it is a part of that longer Abbey Road-ending medley) with a smooth and delicate touch and then just lose it by going to a more deeper voice just sends shivers down my body. I love the spectrum of his voice. His choruses make you feel a certain sensitive way.

Re: OT: What Are You Listening to Now?
some of the song intros that I came up with.
this could be my all-time favorite. it's just perfectly long and you get hit with the perfect sense of anticipation once you feel that the guitar riff is coming any second now.

both the sample used before the actual song and the escalation of the sample of a woman's voice. Kno just deserves a place on this list.

a possible scenario which Fats mentioned. I don't even like the song that much, yet the intro to it is epic. the Sonics used to use it just perfectly as an intro to Pink Floyd's "Run Like Hell" for their starting line-ups.

lovely sax intro.

I love Pink Floyd. They're my favorite rock group. In a way, Fats stole the obvious and great intro to Money. But, hell, posting some of their more depressing material could be even better. the culmination at 4:20 is something words can't describe. just beautiful. (the sax at the end of the song as well, by the way)

Led Zeppelin are amazing at those songs where there's gradual growth (Stairway to Heaven being the obvious example, of course). side-note - I would love to be able to sing like Robert Plant just for one day. he's simply screaming during the chorus, for **** sakes, and it still sounds absolutely beautiful.

Pink Floyd is still some of the most intense music I've ever heard. I remember it scaring me when I was a little kid.

is there a group that underwent a bigger chance in their style than Pink Floyd pre and post Syd Barrett?

Good Times, Bad Times - how could I forget that opener.
The "anti-into" goes to Over the Hills and Far Away - When they jump in to the main song its so awesome that its hards to sit thru the 2 minute into.

Here is another I forgot. Games - George Duke. The first 20 seconds is so cool and unique, but the rest of the song sucks. I remember the first time I heard this album and this song came on I was like "hell yeah, this sounds awesome", then after 20 seconds, the song just goes to this boring, monotone funk song and they never bring back the opening melody. Such a waste.

Re: OT: What Are You Listening to Now?
I have been on a huge Grateful Dead kick lately. I was always more of a Phish guy, but I've been listening to various Dick's Picks on Spotify at work and have been really, really enjoying it.
I also highly recommend these albums that I recently discovered (both on Spotify):
Alabama Shakes - Sound & Color

David Grisman Quartet - Live at Jazz Alley

Re: OT: What Are You Listening to Now?
Yosemite, any time you want to have a 15 page Grateful Dead conversation, just met me know LOL. I assume you have heard the 1972 Veneta Oregon show, which is IMO the best Dead show ever, especially the Playing in the Band - the best 25 minutes the Dead ever played.
I have been living on this website lately
http://headyversion.com/
Its basically fan rankings of the best live versions of every song. you can vote for your favorite versions w/ comments. You can usually find all the really good versions of songs on youtube, if not, they are all available on archive.org. For example, Friday night I went on a Jack Straw binge and listened to the top 5 versions of Jack Straw. Then I want on a He's Gone binge.
Any shows or songs you've listened to lately that really stick out? I am always up for some good Dead.

I'll have to look at what I've been listening to. Honestly I'm not as familiar with their song names I guess other than tunes on American Beauty. Jack Straw and China Cat Sunflower have been two of my faves lately.
I used to be able top rank my top ten versions of You Enjoy Myself or Stash back in the day, but I'm really just now breaking into the Dead.

Re: OT: What Are You Listening to Now?
In that case, let me point you in the direction of two must listen Grateful Dead shows.
Before I discovered Phish, I pretty much went on a 3 year Grateful Dead binge from 1990 to 1992. They were really the only band I listened to during that period, while collecting 200+ bootlegs (back in the day when you would trade live shows on cassette with all your Dead buddies.) I didn't travel to see the band as much as many of my friends since I usually worked a ton of hours in the summer to avoid having to work much in college. Saw them 5 times (91 two times, 92 two times, 95 once). Also saw Jerry Garcia Band in 92.
Anyway, check out these two shows that are considered by most Dead fans as the two best shows they ever played.
1) 8-27-72 Veneta, Oregon - Best live versions of Darksar, Playing In the Band, China Cat -> I know you Rider, Birdsong and many others. They were dialed in. The story goes, they were tripping balls during this show and it shows. Once the acid started to kick in, about halfway thru the 1st set you can hear a change. All the tunes from there on out are just balls to the wall, frenetic jamming.
2) 5-8-77 Cornell, Ithaca, NY - 72 and 77 are probably the two best years for Dead. There are a ton of good shows from each of those years, 73, 74, 78 and 79 also good, kinda like how Phish's best stuff is probably 1993 and 1997 (at least IMO). Cornell is super smooth, soulful and beautiful. The Scarlett -> Fire is the best ever, also best Morning Dew and plenty other great versions of songs.
They made a DVD about Veneta. Its on Youtube
Here is the Playing In the Band, 21 minutes. My favorite 21 minutes of Dead ever. They go nuts!!!!

Here is the Scarlet -> Fire from Cornell. Amazing transition between songs.

Studio Version of Loser. I love this song.

And my favorite studio Dead song, the 1st side of Terrapin Station, a Classic medley.

you can stream or download pretty much every show ever played. you can get lost in here for weeks.

Good stuff fats. Was familiar with archive, they've got a lot of good Umphreys, Yonder Mountain, etc. I found a great sounding matrix with soundboard and mics I'll post when I get in front of a computer.
