Tweet from MarkDeeksNBA on ESPN The Ten Squared:
Hornets renounced Pargo, Tolliver, White, Ridnour, McRoberts and Douglas-Roberts.

(massive tears shed by me for not retaining CDR)

That means we're getting ready to sign someone. I imagine it's a backup point guard - Roberts or someone else.

And renouncing the rights to CDR does not mean that he's gone for sure. The team can re-sign him, they just don't have bird rights and can't go over the cap by signing him unless it's for the minimum.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

We couldn't sign the Hayward offer sheet without renouncing these guys. It's of little consequence, we renounced both McRoberts and Pargo last season as well. There's just little incentive to keep a 1-year cap hold on the books.

I wonder if we play hardball with Hairston and get him to sign a 80% value contract instead of the customary 120%, especially considering the start he's off to.

Around 14. Only way we go after Stephenson is if we find an alright backup at around 2.5 to 3 mill a year and offers Stephenson 4/44.

Yeah, I believe you are right. Would enable us to go over the cap.

Posting an update with the recent signings. My understanding is that you can't use the Room Exception unless you have less than the Room amount ($2.732m this year) in remaining cap space. When we signed Roberts, we had about $4m left in cap space. So even though the original plan may have been to give him the Room, it may not have turned out that way (likely since we got Lance for much cheaper than we were hoping to get Hayward for).

So with that in mind, along with the Stephenson, Willliams, Pargo, and Vonleh signings, I have us at $76,705. We also still have the Room Exception of $2.732m. If I'm wrong and Roberts did in fact get the Room, then just add that amount back into salary (so about $2.8m).

Notes:
Pargo got the 10-year vet min of $1,448,490; however, the NBA reimburses the difference between it and the 3-year vet min, so the cap hit is actually $915,243 (which is the same as Taylor's salary).
It's likely - even probable - that the reason Hairston has yet to sign is his agent issues. However I'll offer another theory: cap flexibility. The $76,705 amount I estimated assumes Vonleh got 120% of his rookie cap hold (as most rooks do), and takes into account Hairston's cap hold of $958,100. Based on my numbers, we can't give Hairston more than 108% of his cap hold and stay below the cap. Of course we can exceed the cap to sign Hairston, but once we do we'll forfeit the Room Exception. So I wonder if we're holding out to keep our options open.

We can sign someone to the room exception first, then sign Hairston to 120% after that though. No harm done just yet. CDR, Sessions, Marion, Williams, Mike Scott, Emeka Okafor, Jordan Hamilton. Would love Ray Allen, but I know that isn't happening. I wouldn't say no to Earl Clark, Antawn Jamison, Ekpe Udoh, Stiemsma, Billups, or even a return of Mullens but I think all can be had for the minimum.

That's kinda what I was eluding to, as long as Hairston remains unsigned we still have the Room Exception to play with.

I love the fact that we are one of the surprisingly few teams in the league that seem to have a firm grip on all the machinations of the new CBA. Even if we disagree with the salary amount thrown at a player (Marvin, I'm looking at you) there does seem to be a larger plan and a constant awareness of how to maintain maximum flexibility. So many teams get tripped up by tiny nuances in the CBA, but Cho seems to have it locked down. Dude doesn't get enough credit for his bean-counting skills.
