Tom Haberstroh has Marvin Williams as the projected starter at PF:
Scouting report
+ Big tweener reborn as stretch 4 shooting specialist
+ Lives in the corners and top of the key, rarely ventures into paint
+ Solid defender, but limited offensively

Analysis
About to enter his 30s, Williams has evolved into a completely different player than he was projected coming into the NBA out of North Carolina. He's now a Matt Bonner-type role player who camps out beyond the 3-point line and tries to stretch the defense. With no playmaking ability, Williams isn't nearly as skilled on the perimeter as his Charlotte predecessor Josh McRoberts, but Williams is a sniper from the corners, where he made 47 percent of his attempts.

Here's the issue: No one respected him out there. According to SportVU player-tracking data provided to ESPN Insider, Williams' gravity score was well below-average for his position even though that was his primary job -- to keep the defense honest. For reference, his stretch indicators were nowhere near the respect ratings of the Ryan Andersons and Channing Fryes of the NBA.

If Williams doesn't add value as a floor-spacer, then it's hard to justify his starting gig. He'll need to add a secondary weapon if he wants to cash in on a big contract this summer when he becomes a free agent. Frank Kaminsky could take his job.

I haven't been able to watch the games, but Marvin starting at the 4 again is the oddest thing. We've used our last 4 top 10 picks on guys who are arguably best suited for PF (I know, I know, MKG's health; not the point), yet there's Ol' Marv still starting. I don't dislike him like as much as some, but it's still weird.

Then last night we held out some starters and Hawes for some reason and gave Cody time at the 5. Cody and Frank also shared the court at times. This goes back to what some of us were saying about Cody and Frank being a future 4/5 pairing for this team. Of course Zeller needs to get stronger, but with the game getting smaller I could absolutely see him getting a lot of time at the 5. Given that we have absolutely no defense at center, and only 2 guys at the position, I expect to see Cody there a lot more this year.

EDIT: This is the Marvin thread, isn't it? Woops.

Had to give Marv some love in my last column.

I don't think any of us ever expected to see Marv pull-off such MKG-like blocks

He's in great shape.

There are only 14 players averaging more than 20 minutes/game with DReb% over 20 and USG% under 20. The other 13 are primarily interior players and none with the combined perimeter defense and 3 point shooting like Marvin.

He's quietly made himself into a valuable 3D commodity.

Forget MKG... some of those were Biz tier blocks. Very impressive. Where did he find all this athleticism?

He's now a Monstar and actually stole it from Biz. This shows why Marv has rejuvenated athleticism and Biz's blocks/36 are down and fouls/36 are well up.

Marvin Gaye Williams straight Ego Trippin' Out this year.

Lyrics
Hey homeboy how come everywhere you go you have to go by limousine man

Hey man that's my thing

I know its your thing
Every time I see you you are awful clean you got your rings generally
Y'know
Flash the cash is what I need
I can understand it

I got the baddest cool, could never be the fool, the ladies wait to get down with me
The love I make superb, to doubt me is absurd, the ladies say I'm the greatest you see
I want to have your spot, and more than what you got, I bought the baddest house I could find
All it must be said I'm greatest in the bed and when I love a lady she's mine
I know I'm really hot, my diamonds shine a lot, check out here this 450 SE babe
I'm what's its all about

Ego tripping out (tripping out, tripping out, your tripping out, your tripping out)
Ahh ha hey hey

Without a doubt, I know we ego tripping out, sometimes it's a shame
But it caused so much pain, don't want you baby
I know you ego tripping out, 'times it's a shame but it can't do without
Without a doubt, I know your ego tripping out, hey she don't know it
Ain't it a shame all the pain to come

I'm better than the rest, check out the way I dress and got a lot of money to spend
The best club in town, is where I get down, your lucky if I choose you my friend
Walk the greatest walk, I got to be the talk, I've got the greatest show in town
Woo hoo rock with other men then roll over to me so I can trill your soul baby
Aw check out the love mink standing tall in bold can fulfill your needs into the cold baby
Needless to say I'm your greatest play
Ego tripping out, oh, ego tripping out,
Yeah, ego tripping out

In my mind what it's for
Got a sweet tooth for the chick on the floor
Walking in my shoes
Walking to the beat
Still got some love inside
Some good old body heat

Oh baby
Spread the news
Only here to deepen my soul
No it ain't about money

Turn the fear into energy
'Cause the toot and the smoke
Won't fulfill the need
Only one way, only one way
Feel the feeling, energy of a kiss

I cant believe how much Marv has improved. He looks so much quicker, stronger, and more active. He couldnt even post up PGs or drive by slow bigs last season. He'll never get the numbers to be in the most improved player discussion, but I really doubt many players in the league actually improved much more than he has. The craziest thing is the amount of confidence he gained from last season after having such a reputation for being passive. Maybe im just not thinking, but it seems like its pretty rare for someone at that point in their career to suddenly develop such and edge like he has.

The spirit of MKG hath descended about Marvin Williams, and all the Hornets fans were blessed.

Lamar with the great write up on Marvin: http://www.atthehive.com/2015/12/15/10022050/marvin-williams-has-found-his-way

I remember Lamar harping last season on Cliff not sticking Marvin on the left perimeter, I would love to someday get an explanation from him on the logic there.

enjoyed the thinking behind this one. an article on how eerily similar Harrison Barnes and Marvin Williams are:
https://thecauldron.si.com/is-harrison-barnes-the-next-marvin-williams-22c33338cb6d#.11fbt1mo4

perhaps, it has more to do with Barnes than Williams with him being the one who has free agency and a career ahead of him but still a good read.

Agreed. Marvin is often the player that most sticks out to me when watching Barnes. I don't see Barnes taking a leap if he moves to a new team with more scoring burden. He simply doesn't have the type of game that thrives with him having the ball to create his own shots or shots for others. I do think Barnes is better than Marvin (is now or ever was), but the styles are very similar. Barnes is the perfect 3rd or 4th option on a good team. He will struggle as a 1st or 2nd option.

fun fact - that article linked to one of the two profiles my friend and I wrote for DX back in the day (Felton and Marvin). Good times.

Been a lot of chatter about Batum's upcoming free agency, but nothing on Marv's UFA. Marv has been our most consistent contributor this year - playing rock solid ball on both sides of the court. What does a 29/30 year old role player/small ball 3&D PF see on the open market this summer?

Under the new cap I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Marvin get offered a 3 year, 30 million dollar deal.

Going to be very interested to see what we do, but he seems like a solid floor leader and good locker room presence - a guy you want around, show some loyalty to, and perhaps keep around the organization post basketball. Guess the dominoes will all start to fall after Batum makes his "decision."

EDIT: I think 10 mil a year in the new cap landscape sounds about right, but will be interesting to see if the loser's in FA start to panic and throw mad money at aging role players like Marv.

I think I asked the question a while back, but will ask again. If it game down to re-signing Lin or Marvin and we could only afford to keep one, who would you keep?

Regardless, losing Marvin in summer would be a huge blow.

This guy is my 2nd fave hornet after Batum (errr maybe 3rd after MKG). I hope he will stay with us with a reasonable contract. A lot of teams out there are looking for a stretch four who also defends well, so i really hope the FO could manage to retain him as a hornet.

I think Marv is extremely likely to give us a discount this summer. He's spent a lot of time in the league and the role we have for him fits him perfectly. He also has agreat relationship with our staff and spends his summers in Chapel Hill.

Hoping he gives us a cheap deal that we can build around.
